Ka24e chain tensioner stuck

I changed the head gasket on my ka24e and while putting it back together the tensioner got stuck

is there anyway to get the tensioner to retract without just the valve cover off?

Describe "stuck." Did it pop all the way out? Here's a diagram of what you are dealing with if that helps.
