I'm trying to find information on weber or mikuni carbs for a KA24e. I'm swapping this engine into my '68 Roadster & would like to keep the technology at least somewhat correct for the time. I've seen a few photos of these engines running webers and mikunis, but am having NO luck finding a source for the manifold. I'd actually love to run SUs, but I haven't seen or heard anything about them on a KA24e.

However, I DID find reference that the carb setup not suitable for street driving. I'm wondering why... I don't intend on racing the Roadster (well, at least not at the start ;) Would this type of induction have some sort of negative impact on the engine?

Try using a manifold off a D-21 [hardbody] truck they have the throttle body mount uprite and could easily adapt a carb to it. You would need to seal the injector ports up on the manifold.

Why not go with the injection system though? You would have better fuel economy and have more control of fuel requests.

I'm trying to keep a "retro" look to under the hood. I've researched several possible engine swaps (including one that originally came carbureted) but the KA series turned out to be the easiest & least expensive to get, plus has a much better potential for power. I've never worked with FI, so I have to admit all those wires & hoses looks confusing!

If the carbureted system turns out to be difficult to pull off and/or in some way damaging to the engine, I will be sticking with the FI. Right now the engine is on a stand awaiting a going-over before the swap begins (I still need a transmission anyway) so I have plenty of time to figure out the best route.

I'll definitely check into the D-21 manifold. Thanks!

In no way would the carb setup be damaging... in fact, there is a conversion kit for dual sidedraft 45mm (IIRC) Mikuni's for the KA24E somewhere out there on the web. Another route would be to keep the fuel injection and fabricate or hunt down an individual throttle body induction setup, add velocity stacks and it would have that carbed look, but with the benefit of ITBs (got throttle response?!) and fuel injection.

One good place to look would be at the SCCA GT3 series 240's... they run sidedrafted KA24E's because EFI isn't allowed in their class.

We are planning on building a high compression, ITB'd KA24DE for our roadster.

Aren't there some issues to deal with when converting a motor from an EFI system to a carb? Timing, others?

Would an ITB system be something a fairly well equipped newbie would be able to install? I've got pretty decent experience with carbs (SUs... with 2 Roadsters & 3 early Z cars I've gotta be!) I have almost zero experience with engine internals, which is why I've got this engine on a stand so I can tear it down to see how it works.

As for timing issues... great question! I'm still pondering passing emissions & what to do with all the engine electronics if I go carbed.

SCCA.org, here I come ;)

Hey Nismo_Freak,Great looking roadster and good luck with that! As long as car manufacturers are bringing back the retro look, why not Nissan and this roadster? Datsun 1600-2000's, right?

We had a Nissan dealership here a few years back that sold some restored Z cars. That was fun.Don't know how widely dispersed Nissan got with those restored Z's. You may have seen some in your area too.----------------------------------------------------------------------------

AZ....I think I would stick with fuel injection. Carbs are rather inferior and in more ways than one. Ever own a car with a troublesome carb? Then again, I recall the way a carb presents itself to you. You can actually prime it and coax it if having difficulty starting. It is probably more of a DIY job if you want to swap it out too.

After paying mega$$ to get an all in one gas pump, gas filter (that was in the gas tank of my wife's 94 Jeep Cherokee) replaced, I really appreciated the old carb setup.

as for the Z info. Nissans plan was 2000 units rebuilt the final cut was 200 far short of what they wanted to do. Finding good cars they could buy to do the restore proved to be to difficult so the program was dumped.
