I just want to see what everyone else would say of a budget na build for a ka24e. Im going to be running the pdm c404 cam, itb set up and a jwt ecu tune. How much power gains to you think I will see? The engine will have a stock block, its the earlier model with 9:1 compression raito, just did the headgasket and timing chain with a newer head. Compression is around 190 across all four cylinders.

Im going to be doing this soon its just a matter of saving money. I dont want rediculous power just something with a good mid-high range pull and more response.

Probably maybe a 20hp gain. Idk, nothing special. I'd spend that money on a dohc swap instead if you want to stay n/a.

All motor single cams can make 200+ hp/tq... but not with just bolt-ons. You gotta pay to play. its doable and has been done many times, but it takes work and knowledge in what youre doing.

Yeah Ive been reading up on it, Im not trying to make insane amounts of power. Im trying to spend less then 1200 on it too, well see how that goes.

Im not sure why everyone thinks the DOHC is so much better for na, Ive seen more high power NA SOHC's then DOHC's. I could be wrong though.

The dohc is just a better designed engine, period. That pretty much sums it up.

But if the sohc is what you have to work with, go for it. That's pretty much the situation I'm in, but I was just gonna wait for a swap and leave my sohc alone.

>1200 is like a good I/H/E combo and maybe some kind of piggy back fuel management. Imo, all motors are all or nothing. You go all out or its just a waist of time and money. Id save up for a motor swap or keep it as is... maybe turbo. but thats just me.

The dohc cam may have a few things that are better, like the oil squirters for lubricationg the piston walls, the fact that it uses more valves. But both have ka's have the crankshaft that just isnt designed for high revs. You can see on both ka's the power bands drop off right around 6000rpm's.

From what I have been reading more people have success in bulding the SOHC for NA. There still isnt proof of a 200whp NA DOHC, well not that I know of anyway.

Besides the point how much power am I looking at? I forgot to mention it will have cheap header 4-2-1 header and 2.5" exhaust. Im hoping for 150whp.

KA24E 190psi across -ITBs (gsxr 1000)($120)-pdm c404 cam($370)-jwt ecu($550)-header+2.5" piping ebay exhuast(100$)

And tuning? ITBs aren't just bolt on you know. You'll need some kind of standalone fuel management like AEM EMS or something.

I think you should do some research, I will be spending no more then 1200 and doing all the work myself. Im into autocross and a little bit of drifting, and I daily my car. I dont want 250+whp.
pandapants wrote:And tuning? ITBs aren't just bolt on you know. You'll need some kind of standalone fuel management like AEM EMS or something.
1200 for a good I/H/E???! are you crazy man. Im not someone who pays 400+ for an exhaust just because it has a name brand. You can have one welded up with the same power results for less then $150. Also the itb's are about 100 shipped, and I will be modifying the stock intake manifold to use the itb's

Yeah im going to be using a map sensor, I havnt talked to jwt yet but i was going to see if they could program the ecu you to read the map sensor instead of the maf. I would use the same wiring for the maf except use the the 5v source from the tps. Im going to be using the stock fuel rail and injectors and maybe an aftermarket fpr.

Once again im only shooting for 150whp, thats plenty for me.

i have better things to "research" than to gain 20 hp with an sohc for 1200 bux. if you are only shooting for 150, hell go for it.

you guys are all bashing him for a s***ty reason.

with the money hes putting into it for the ITBs and cams and stuff, he WILL gain a decent amount of power, and itll have excellent throttle response.

the single cams do tend to be much better for N/A power.

it's not always about rb's and sr's.

op,i you want to run gsxr itb's you will need a standalone ecu, and if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a aem ems,go with a megasquirt ecu, cheap and very reliable, and you will have fun wiring it up.

you can get the ecu at diyautotune.com,you also might want to check ka-t.org.they have a section just for the ka-e.

Hell with it bro, i was thinking the same of doing a similar set-up with my single but i wanted more power so i just decided to stick with the sr. But i'm with you with this 1 go for it can't wait to see it in progress

Yeah but I dont see why you HAVE to have a standalone. I wana email jwt and see if they can just reprogam the ecu to read the manifold air pressure sensor instead of the maf, and still use the stock tps. Can anyone tell me why that wouldnt work or why you absolutly have to use a standalone?

I'd be pumped to see anyone make a 200hp NA sohc! Good luck!

Ditch the clutch fan for electric fans, I/H/E, lightweight pulleys, plus your cam, maybe a rom tune and I think you'll be on your way to making some fun!

thanks, but once again im only shooting for around 150whp.

So still how much power gains do you think I see?

And why couldnt I just have JWT program to use a map sensor and run that?

stock ecu's cannot be reprogramed buy any tuner to run on a map sensor, if that was the case then you would see alot of other guys not buying standalone's

I dont see why not, if they can change fuel map settings and timing. I was talking to my step dad whos a computer engineer and he was saying they should be able too. Idk maybe something with automotive ecu's dont allow them to do that kind of stuff.

Ill just have to email JWT and some others to see.

sounds like a fun job...i remember when i had my single slammer s13 and i wanted to make a 200whp n/a monster, lol...it can be done but your gonna need a little bit more than 1200...that'll give you a little more oomph but not enough...and i can't remember but i think the dohc pistons into a sohc block will increase the compression a lot, I/H/E, cams, ecu upgrade, fuel system and ignition upgrade with itbs and a full tune will get you to the 200whp n/a mark...good luck!

gl with the build, people get all pissy when you talk about n/a builds

the SOHC is a stuff motor with plenty of torque.

personally im going with an n/a SR for the VVT; and 165 hp outta the box. slight build (might overbore haven't decided) cams lighten the drivetrain should make for a fun setup.

eventually i wanna do an ITBS setup as well, but that requires a stand alone so ill do mine in steps

edit* OR if your good with a welder, make a plenum and still run a MAF

there are factory cars with ITBS that have this, and no need for a standalone (definitely need some tuning though)

Yeah I was thinking about running a plenum over them, but idk. Wheres everyone getting the 200WHP idea, my goal is 150whp.

So still no one knows if you can reprogram an ecu to read a map sensor?

I think the 150HP is easily obtainable with your budget. My 191K mile stock SOHC put 124HP to the wheels (used for my baseline). I am finishing up some details on my newly rebuilt motor, but hopefully I'll have it dynoed in the near future. I'm even running a stock cam for now. I'm hoping for the same numbers(150+HP) to be topped off with some dyno ecu tuning for another 10+HP.

Maybe when the budget expands I can play with that magic 200HP number...

Yeah Im very excited for it, the reason im not going for big numbers is

1)Its the stock block with 165k miles

2)Im in school and need to save for the payments that start in 7 months

3)I make 8.75 an hour

4)34 hours a week of work, and about 20-30 hours of school a week= not alot of freetime

But I do have another short block sittin here, Im thinking of high CR build after I finsih this, then rebuild the head(valves and seats, mechanical lash adjusters, slightly stiffer springs) and put the head on that

I just emailed JWT about the map sensor thing so well see how it goes!
