Guy's my KA just blew on my 89. Trying to figure out what to do rebuild or upgrade. I'm in California so I don't want to make it illegal. Anybody face a similar dilemma. This car has been perfect since 1989 with no problem's until last night. That's 16 year's of perfect service. No major problems in 16 years. Can I upgrade to a KA24DE. Will the smog and accessories work on this motor ??

I think you can answer those questions yourself:

1) What is your time limit (i.e. is this your only driver, you don't have a lot of time, etc)?2) What is your budget for this car to rebuild/upgrade (usually the determining factor)?3) What are your goals?

What exactly "blew" on the ka? If it's just a headgasket, that can be replaced cheap and "easily". You could even swap in another sohc motor for anywhere between Free - $100, depending on how long you wait. Of course, you won't know the conditions of those motors - again, depending on your budget you may either want to do a rebuild, pay a shop or do it yourself, etc.

The Dohc swap is doable and legal if you swap over the dohc emissions & ecu etc, but if you search the threads which also outline it, it is a lot of work if you are just going to be doing no upgrades and just a daily driver, plus it's usually more expensive than sohc motors .

If you need any help, feel free to contact me via email or aim - listed in my profile.

In any case, I should be doing a "mini-rebuild" of my sohc motor this coming thanksgiving weekend if everything works out - I'll do my best to document it well so it will help other sohc ppl. The main advantage of sohc is that it is much easier to work on for a lot of things, relatively.
