Hey guys, I think it's time for me to build my motor, i'm already ka-t, (check sig) i've been searching around and i know what's available parts wise but what i want to know is what are the essential motor work that needs to be done, not all the extra things but just what would i absolutely have to have done to my motor to have a reliable daily boosted 400ish ka?

There are also a few choices between rods, pistons, bearings, cams, valves,etc...whats the difference between them, specs wise and the different brands and if one is "better" than another?

Probably the most important question is how much would a build cost? $2000, 3k, 4k? I know it all depends on what parts but like i said i'm just looking to get a solid motor and if there are any other parts that you guys recommend that i would need beyond what i have, feel free to add to the list.

I have searched and found useful answers but i felt like i just had to get my direct questions out there, and i don't feel like registering at ka-t.org, id rather we stimulate nico.

Thanks guys.

My quick calculation was..

Pistons: $450~600 (CP, JE, Wiseco)Rods: $300~400 (Eagle, Manley, Crower)Bearings: $40~60 (ACL)Machining: $350~450 (bore, deck, balance, cleaning, etc)Gaskets: $50~150 (your choice)

I am not going to explain why but I would go with JE, Crower, and factory gaskets.

thanks for the response but i i guess i'm not asking my question right because i already knew all that info, but i do appreciate it...let see if i can rephrase this...

i know i'm gonna have to buy pistons, rods, bearings for the main parts of the bottom end, but i guess what i'm really trying to ask is what is the essential machine work needed.

I'll probaly have ams build this and i know they have a whole crap load of options on there block, i mean do i really need to o-ring my block, or get my crank knife edged...i mean besides boring, decking, balance, cleaning what else machine work would i need and is there any other machine work that you guys would recommend, i'm only gonna be using this car as a street car, just cruising and maye everyonce in a while a night at the drag strip.

i guess i can just do more research on the different brands when that time comes.

As far as machine work goes this is just personal preference, if its not going to be seeing really high boost like over 24 psi then i don't see a need for the block to be oringed and if its not a track car i wouldn't worry about having the motor knife edged.

This is what i would do (and did) I would get all the machine work done (cleaning, boring/honing, decking only if necessary) have the crank polished and have the ENTIRE rotating assymbley balanced!

Thank you...that's the kind of answer i was looking for!

I don't plan on boosting higher than that at all, maybe only 20, 21psi, around there as i want to retain streetability...i still have to get my car emission tested so legality is also an issue.
