So, my 240 isn't a bad smoker... but I recently took a trip with it (I never go farther than 30 miles at a time, this is a town car) that totaled 200 miles. Over that period, I burned about 3/4 a quart of oil. Not to mention, during the trip, sitting in a rediculous amount of traffic, after being in the same 10 yards for roughly 10 minutes there was heavy amounts of smoke comming out of the exhaust. This happens when I sit at a light too long- smoke starts billowing out the back, and until I drive it off for a while it keeps smoking. However, nobody seems to have a concrete reason to the oil loss. My father suggested and compulsively ordered parts for a valve seal replacement.

My question is, should this fix such a minor oil burn/leak problem, and if so, does anybody have a walkthrough (however basic it may be, but I wouldn't mind a detailed one ) so that I don't end up destroying my engine?

Hi there. I'm going to say that your father got it dead on the money. I had a Dodge Caravan that as you know has the exact same common problem as you described. It is mearly due to the fact that Mitsubishi put crappy valve seals in the head of their motor and sometimes if the case is bad the valve guide itself will start to slide into the port. When that happens the head has to be removed so the valve guide can be pushed back into place at which point a groove should be cut into the boss with a clip to hold it from sliding back again. That would be worse case scenario with the Caravan, with the Nissans however the valve guides most likely aren't prone to (or just can't) move. If that's the case you could have worn valve guides in your worst case scenario but replacing the valve seals is a great start. I'm not going to make up a step by step way to do it as: 1) I'm no Nissan mechanic and 2) I'm not a mechanic. LOL But there should be general guides to follow somewhere on the net.

usually with valve guide seal... it smoke the worst on take off and heavy throttle.... but never as much as you said...

I'll say chances are it's the rings... If you're lazy just do a vaccum test... if you're not lazy... do a complete dry and wet compression test.... if both of the test is good then it is your valve guide seal... since both test can't test seals...
