well like the title says i need to know what to shim the valves at cold. the book says with engine hot but i'm not able to do that since this engine is being built!!!! it is a de motor and i had a valve job done so my shims are all out of tolerance and as most of you know these have to be orderd and they aren't cheap. does anyone know what set the valve clearance at cold well it's 80* outside . i searched and could not find a absolute #

Well this is one question I would also like to know.

Here's what I would do assuming most of us shim the valves when the motor is cold and use the measurements that the FSM gives us without worrying to much that it's cold and not hot. Then once everything is installed and running we get the motor up to operating temp, do the usual leak checks etc and then verify the cam to bucket clearance.

well i found on a thread some where that said they only vary about .001 of an inch between warm and cold motors doing what (wd) suggested set to fsm spec. cold then check and verify when warm. !!!! they also noted that on the jim wolf tech. web sight they have a camshaft install for the ka24de that is for their cam shafts that they sell. in the install they say .013 - .016 of an inch and it does not say warm or hot . i guess you could call and ask. any way i am setting mine at .014 - .015 trying to get as close to .014 as possible on all of them (down the middle) . it will be a while yet before i get this motor up and running but i will post results when i see for my self. hopefully this will help every one when doing this. thanks again wd!!!!

i checked mine cold this past weekend...I was getting .011 at the high end. On my intake cam the worst was .008, but the intake was not the stock cam and was not at stock timing. The FSM is clear that you must check half the banks at TDC for #1 and then the other at TDC the next revolution.

I am running fine AFAIK and vacuum is good.

Having just recently checked clearances both hot and cold, I'll confirm that the don't change much. You'll be fine.
