Are there any cold clearance specs for adjusting valve shims on a KA24DE?

its hard to get the head up to operating temp on an engine stand

Blow torch...or hair dryer.

Hehehe...

...

I'd juyt measure and check for consistency (i.e. if warm they should be .013"-.016", and cold they are all .018"...you'll be fine).

Install the motor, then do the test PROPERLY.

see I was told the opposite from my local nissan dealer

there tech said that as the valve head it self was exposed the combustion temp. that the expansion of the valve would pull the valve farther from the seat creating more space at the other end between the stem and the cam lobe. does that make any sence

or was he just dazzling with BS

Well, either way...the spec will be LARGER.

And since you CAN'T test it warm, you have to go with what you've go.

Really, as long as you can fit at least a .010" feeler gauge between the base lobe and the shim...and as long as a .020" DOES NOT fit (too thick)...you'll be OK to get the motor started, and then check properly.
