the best advice I will give you will be in two parts. 1. lurk more. figure this is a common swap over, read, read, read.2. search. again, this is a common swap, so there's probably quite a bit of info on this already.

Write this down.

KA transmission bellhousings will not work with SR blocks.

Since the SR auto trans is a pretty unpopular choice, you can typically snag them at a respectable price.

Do you like apples or oranges? You can swap to another stock KA24DE for insanely cheap. It would probably cost you no more than $400. You will be limited horsepower wise though, but if you just want a daily driver, that is fine. KA are very reliable when properly taken care of. Now if you want to spend a bit more money and put some more work into it, you could go with the SR. It is also a dependable reliable motor, and since it is turbocharged, you can get alot of power out of it if you are willing to spend the money.

It all comes down to your personal opinion and what you want out of the car. Research and read alot.

The KA24 A/T will not bolt up to an SR20; if you want to stay with an A/T, then you'll need to use an SR20 A/T. However if you also want to swap over to a manual transmission, you can use a KA20 manual transmission with an SR20 bellhousing.

There's GOT to be a writeup for this.

a write up for what? The auto housings? dunno, I'm with Bart on this one. Definitely get the auto with the SR since not too many folks get them with the auto.

Personally I bought my SR way back. Went with the SR since there was more aftermarket support for it back then. Now, it's eh...dunno, tough to say. Either way, they're gonna cost you money to build and maintain. It's getting harder to find either one in decent shape nowadays with kids slapping turbos on stock KA's and grenading them, and the worst sr motor sets from junked cars that have been stewing in their own oil for a decade plus varnishing over after getting beaten on by their last owner...I guess it's really your call. Either way, in before someone else says "money pit"

It really depends on the OP's goals. Does he just want the car back on the road? Then I say drop a KA back in there.

If he wants more power his options are much more vast. He could get an SR, or a CA, or an RB and drop one of them in. Or he could turbo a KA. In this case, the world is his oyster so long as he has the funding.

Mast, I'm getting ready to do a write up on swapping bellhousings for SR manual transmissions, but unfortunately I don't have experience with the auto trans, so I can't offer much experience. All I can tell you though is that the bellhousings are different from manual to auto, and the bolt patterns are different from SR to KA.

Man, you guys aren't kidding... there's not a lot on swapping auto transmissions! I wonder if the SR FSM has an AT section...

It does. I haven't really check it in depth since I don't deal with ATs, but I can only imagine that it's pretty close to the KA AT.

EDIT: Found out a few differences between the SR and KA ATs. The SR ATs are a bit beefed up. More clutch packs and the converter stalls out higher amongst a few things.

While we're not certain, you should be able to plug the SR AT lower harness into a US chassis harness.
