I just replaced the head on my 240SX and now it wont start. I paid someone to do the work for me because I was to busy but they left it unfinished so I finished where they left off. The question I have is when he took the head off he proped the timing chain so he would not have to take the bottom timing cover off. Can the chain fall off the bottom pully? can you change the head and set the timing without removing the bottom timing cover?

Also the timing chain only has one silver matting mark on it. When I read the repair manuel it says it should have 2 silver matting marks. is that correct? The same thing with the cam sprocket chain, it only have one silver matting mark. The repair manuel shows 2 and you line them up with the notches on the cam sprockets but there is only one silver matting mark to line them up.

The manuel also leaves out what to set the timing when putting the distributer in from what I have read you want to put the distributer in with the timing advanced to 18 degrees, am i correct ?

the upper chain should have 3 mating marks. I think its 20 degrees but dont quote me on that. if your off one tooth it wont run( at least mine didnt after i swapped out cams.

the upper chain on mine seems to only have one silverlink. im worried that the timing chain fell off the bottom crank pully but i dont know if thats possible.

On the KA24DE, the bottom chain will not fall off the crank sprocket when the top sprocket is removed. There are two silver timing marks on the lower chain.

The ignition timing is spec'd for 20 degrees BTDC at idle.

To check your cam timing, first disconnect the ignition coil wire, remove all the spark plugs and remove the valve cover. Have someone tap the starter while you have your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole. Once you feel compression, insure that the block timing pointer at the front pulley is pointing to the zero mark on the pulley. Remove distributor cap and insure that the rotor is pointing to #1 firing position. The #1 piston is now sitting at TDC compression stroke. Remove the upper timing cover. The top end of the lower timing chain mating (silver) mark should be at the large idler sprocket gear mark. The upper timing chain mating (gold) mark should be at the small idler sprocket gear mark. The other two chain mating marks should at their cam gear marks.

Here's a picture of the cam timing:
