Before anyone says anything, yes I did search!

Is there a reason to change the lower chain if only the top chain is loose (as far as I can tell). The top tensioner seems to be OK (I took it off and was able to work the oil out, and it moved freely), but I still hear the tell tale "playing card in bicycle spokes" sound.I did remove both top guides - well, the one that was on the right side. The top one had broken off at some point unknown to me. The noise is still there, but is less.

If I do need to do both chains, why does the FSM tell you to remove the head when tearing the front of it down for the upper and lower TC?To me it seems totally unnecessary, but I haven't done one on these motors yet.How far do I need to drop the pan (or do I) to remove the front cover?

Thanks for all the help!Todd

There is no reason to remove the head. To get the oil pan off, you will have to loosen the motor mounts and jack the engine up several inches to provide enough clearance to pull the pan off. You can’t just lower it a bit in the front because you need to scrape off the RTV gasket and apply a new one.
