My plans are to get a KA24DE motorset, tear it down, get the bottom end rebuilt with forged pistons stock rods and replacement bearings and all that, to run up to 350hp daily driven for the hopefully years to come. What else can wear out on these motors? I'l do a new timing set, lightweight flywheel and pullies, clutch, valve stem seals before i swap it in. I'l probably do some DIY head porting, nothing major. New seals all around.

I'l break-in the motor in N/A for a while before i bolt up the turbo stuff--i dont want any break in particles getting to my turbo.

I want pump-gas power that will last me practically forever, the motor will be very cared for and maintained its whole new life. I'l probably get a JWT ECU, just cause it'd be easiest for my modest power goals.

I've got an 89 hatchback with 222k miles and low compression, it runs but its days are numbered. I wanna build up this DE on the side and drop the practically new engine, then turbo it shortly after.

Anything else i should plan on during the rebuild, any thoughts or comments on this idea?

sounds good. it would probably be easier to go ahead and turbo it instead of waiting, be easier to install since you'll already have everything out anyway

your plan is pretty much exactly like mine... except Im just gonna build it all together at once with the turbo and just have an in-line seperate filter for the turbo oil feed. if you have any specific questions Id be happy to answer, Ive been learning about this stuff for what seems like forever now... good luck!

WHO told u that the stock rods were forged..?? If thats the case, why did Chris May and other 240s that have put down well over 400 rwhp change out the STOCK rods for "aftermarket" stronger rods..??Also explain to me how a friend of mine SNAPPED his stock rod on a 100 shot of nitrous.. (ka24de w/80k miles)Why waste $700 + on rods that are not needed...??

because they're forged rods that don't have a lot of meat to them.

I'm not going for any KA24DE power records so im not going to bother with upgraded rods, although i might change my mind on that if i wanna boost the redline. I just want a good reliable street power level of maybe 300-350whp. As long as my bearings get their oil the rods should be fine.

hats off to chris mays and others on their accomplishments, but fyi, there are several 350+ hp KAs that have a completely stock bottom...including cast pistons.

forged pistons and stock rods is PLENTY for 350-400 horses, assuming the tuning is on point. just because *somebody* threw a rod at some point doesnt mean that (1) the rods are at fault or (2) the situations are comparable at all.

Detonation-

FYI Insufficient fuel will brake aftermarket rods too.

i would say determine the range of boost that you want to run. Any where higher than like 17 psi on stock head bolts without o-ringing of the block and stock headgasket is pushing it. The stock head bolts will stretch(lifting the head) past that boost level.

I'd run 15psi max, maybe 10psi daily depending on how much power i want. T3 turbo of course.

well, with a t3 turbo, you are prolly not going to hit 350 rwhp. You'll be pushing that turbo too much to make that power level. Just get a t3/t4 and call it a day.

Have you seen evidence of this? I never have. And in particular on stock bolts where the head has never been removed and the bolts never reused. Not that I am saying you are wrong, but I like to see evidence to back up a statement that I've never heard before.

Dude, we ran 30psi plus xxxshot of NOS on Duy's KA on stock RE-USED head bolts with no issues but it doesn't hurt to get ARP if you can.
