Recently I have been helping my good friend fix a few problems he had with his 93 S13, that included a broken clutch release fork, and a cracked transmission input shaft.

We were able to replace the fork and shaft without too many hangups, and have reinstalled the transmission and all hardware related to it. BUT, now the car will not start or run.

At first the starter was suspect, so my friend picked up a new one at AUtozone. Unfortunately, this didnt help the problem.

Now when you try to start the car you can hear the starter spin quickly and freely while it makes absolutely no contact with the flywheel. We tried pushing the car and pop-starting it in hopes to get the flywheel and clutch to engage, but to no avail.

Is there anyone that could shed light on this situation for me? Is there a procedure that is needed to be done with the flywheel concerning its alignment with the starter when dropping the transmission?

THank you in advance for any light you are able to shed on this nagging problem!

I do not understand what you possibly could of done to create this problem, unless you have the starter spaced away from the trans bellhousing some how.Is the starter sitting flush on the trans and trans flush with the engine block? Electircally you could check your contacts like the main battery cable is it secured properly to the starter?

I would honestly not be surprised if the new starter had issues. Maybe a fubar'd gear reduction. Hell, even the wrong gear reduction. Just something to consider...

This is also the concensus that I have come to.

We didnt even remove the Flywheel or clutch pack, so the only issue that could be suspect is the Starter and it's alignment......

The ****ty thing is that we had to turn in the stock starter as a core, so now we dont have a point of reference to troubleshoot the alignment of the reduction gear and the starter itself.

Ouch. That blows. Did they test the old starter before selling you the new one? If it hasn't been more than a week or two since you got it, they may still have your old one at the store. You might run up there with the new starter and have them test both if they still have the old one. If it does turn out that they are both bad (or the wrong one), I urge you to consider an oem starter. I know they're expensive, but you can rest assured that it will last. I wouldn't trust an aftermarket starter any farther than the walk home.
