Hey all,

I was hoping some of you who have a more experience could help me out with this problem im having. I bought a 90 240sx with a blown motor, and i put in a motor from a 96.

I got it all wired up and timed and got it to start. I timed it just like my other 240 via checking it with a timing light (which is to spec with the service manual)

Anyway, it wouldnt idle, it will start and if i play with the gas pedal i can keep it alive for as long as ill feather it. The motor is shaking a decent amount and it seems like a misfire, so i take the good plug wires off my other 240 and check. same deal. Checked the spark plugs and none are fouled. Checked to see if any specific cylinder wasnt getting fuel, but they all are.

At this point my buddy and i are wondering if we messed up the timing. so we start messing with it and we found that if we move it one "notch" counterclockwise and turn the distributor as far as it will go clockwise with the bolt in place, it will idle (still like balls mind you).

i thought it might be a ground so i looked at those and they all seem okay? Also all the EGR business is gone and plugged with plates. Not sure how that effects the computer.

The car is running a bit rich, so im pretty sure its misfiring, just not sure why.

Any help or suggestions would be fricking awesome.

Thanks

check your spark plug wires to see if you have them in the right order on the distributor cap ive done that before it was just like you described. also check the gap on your spark plug wires that could be causing it to misfire like that as well.

If you have to take the distributor to one extreme or the other to even maintain idle says to me that the timing is off. Set engine to TDC then check the position of the rotor. Make sure the rotor points to #1 cylinder spark position.

I checked to make sure the distributor wires are all in the correct order, and as i said before the timing is off by less than one tooth. Im starting to think that maybe my cam alignment is off by one tooth, so if i get some free time this weekend ill take off the VC and check that.

If it is my cam alignment what is the easiest way to adjust that? do i have to take off both timing covers and the oil pan again? or is there a way to adjust it without too much trouble with just the top timing cover off?
