KA24DE rpm's (not dying but a diff question)

I have a question about my stock KA24DE in my 93 hatch. When i gear down and nail it in third my engine seems to do something that is similar to vtec. When i floor it and its at about 4-5.5k rpm's it picks up just fine but when it hits 5.5k it kicks in alot harder....like a honda with vtec would.....is this normal? I have driven other stock 240's like mine and some did the same thing while others didn't...anyone know what this is? Sorry if this seems like a noobish question...any help would be appreciated thanks !
