Hey, me and my dad just baught a ka24de for 300$ It has 124k on it, and its in soooo many pieces. At first I was excited because its gonna be fun rebuilding it pretty much from scratch. I've never rebuilt an engine Im kinda worried it may be too much. But thats not the problem, I have the forums, and I have the factory service manual, blah blah. MY CONCERN is what shld I look for? Is there anything that usually goes wrong? Something the KA's are known for needing. Or anything that is know to give me problems? Thanks

Look around for leaks and such. So, you're gonna take the KA apart and put it back together? You should buy new gaskets, and also check to see all the mechanical parts are in good condition, like the valves.

since you already have it out of a car, i would go all out and get the head redone, new rings, bearings, metal head gasket, new timing chain tensioners, arp head and main studs and hone out the block

at least this way you dont ahve to worry about anythign going bad

clean everything send head to machine shop and inspected by a pro have valves and guids checked. Inspect block and cylinder bores have honed. replace all bearing if in doubt have machine shop size the bearings. all new gaskets. replace the oil pump, timing chain, tensioner, guides crank and cam gears. Replace the water pump. test the operation of all the vacuum control solenoids. Replace all of the vacuum lines CLEAN EVRYTHING new pistons are pretty cheap and worth the money if you are going this far. Clean Evrything If in doubt about anything replace it!! or have it checked you don't want to have to take it apart again for something that you had in your hand Factory manuals are awsome information a chilton book doesn't get ino every detail but the inspection procedures are very helpful and not always in factory manual get both. Remember if you think its expensive now it will cost at least twice as much when it goes bad after you put it back in the car! CLEAN AND INSPECT EVEYTHING. BEST LUCK WISH MY SON WAS INTERESTED IN THIS STUFF

240sxbuffy pretty much covered it. The onlything I would add is to consider replaceing the radiator. The cost is small compaired to what a full rebuild costs. Also put in a new clutch and flywheel when you put the engine back in.

All of hte above should give you a car that will last years with regular maintance.
