Its pretty straight forward just don't damage the rods when takeing it out. Use an engine stand and flip the engine upside down, oil pan facine up. Use a rubber malet and use something to hit the rubber mallet but try not to damage the rods, unless your replacing it. Hit one side then the other, keep on repeating and it hsould come out. Also make sure the head is off lol.

How are the pistons connected to the rods? What about the crankshaft?

The pistons are connected to the rods by the pins. The rods are connected to the crank by the rods' end caps. There are two bolts that hold each cap over/on the crank. Remove those two bolts, slide/pull that end cap off, and push the rod through. Move onto the next rod. Then the next. You do have to remove the head, oil pan, etc first. Throw it on a stand if possible.

Make sure that you put some peices of rubber hose on the end cap bolts, the last thing you want is to have scratch the crank journals.
