I recently did my first oil change on my recently purchased 1993 240SX. We let the oil drain and refilled with 4 quarts. The dipstick is now showing over the fill line. I know that too much oil can be almost as bad as not enough. I'm using a Nissan OE filter. Should I try to drain some oil (gonna be messy, but I can do it) or should I be OK with the 4 quarts until next oil change?

I'm definitely going to fill using 3 3/4 quarts and then check the oil level next time. :oface

Unfortunately, I can't check right now since it's really raining, but as I recall it was approx. 1/4" past the cross-hatched part of the dipstick. The old oil seemed to drain well since it was very hot when we changed it, but I don't know how much was left in there. So...4 quarts + ?. :(

Edit: It was checked again on a very cold engine, so I'd imagine most had made its way back down to the oil pan.

too much oil CAN be just as bad as too little, or worse, it causes the oil to 'froth' up and it looses its viscosity, basically the equivalent of having no oil since there's air bubbles where the oil should be......
