KA24DE not firing up....second one

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

my 95 de in a 90 240 workes great...

doing the same on my friends.....he bought a 95 motor from a salvage yard....even got to turn on the motor before he bought it...well we installed it along with harness ect.....well the motor turns but thats it....we even took the harness, maf, distributer, and ecu from my car and swapped it on his.....his car still does not crank....i'm stumped....one thing his car does diffenent is that when you put the key in the ignition the check engine light comes on.....we have checked fuses as well....what else can i check....we do have those two grounds from the harness connected to the engine and the other as well and its grounded to the body......LMK whacha think...eric

Always check for spark and fuel pressure first.

we are getting spark....as for fuel.....well we just took out the motor a week ago from the shell....so all the parts have been freshly ran...motor and shell components......

sorry for being a tard but how do i check for pressure......one thing i noticed is when we crank the car it smell like gas pretty bad....i could not find a leak

Well if you smell fuel it's likely getting there. If you want to check, pull out a spark plug, and look down into the cylinder w/a flashlight. You'll see it pooled on top the piston. BTW you should clear out that fuel after changing or checking something, to make sure that the extra fuel isn't keeping it from starting... Just pull the fuel pump fuse and crank a few times.

Reset the ECU and start over; check the codes. If anything blaring is wrong that'll point you in the right direction. Does it try to start? Ie do you get any popping from the exhaust?

Well if you're getting fuel+spark, then the only thing left is the timing: if it's off enough it won't start, so check that.
