I just swaped my motor in my 92 because the timing chain broke. I put a motor out of a 94 in it. I was told it was out of an early 94 (but the motor was already pulled so they weren't sure if it just got inventoried wrong). I put it in the car, and now it wont start. I have reset the timing multiple times. tried makin adjustments and checked the compression. I have good compression and spark and fuel. When I try to start it, it sounds like it wants to run but doesn't. It occasionally pops. I am so lost on this car. Any ideas? I used the distributor out of my 92 because the other one didn't come with it.

Yea, Set at TDC pulled distributor 5-10 times and rechecked it multiple times. Also I kept the distributor loose and adjusted it while cranking. Occasionally it would pop more. I read somewhere that the fuel lines could be mixed up so that will be my next step. I set TDC by the crank and also by pulling cyl 1 plug and setting it all the way up and all valves closed. This car took up most of my day today. any other thoughts.

crossed plug wires, upper chain out of time, like you said crossed fuel lines, make sure your ECU plug is bolted tight (i had that problem) check your engine grounds, and vaccum lines, good luck

Checked plug wires. and checked to make sure the 94 and 92 didn't have diff distributors, caps, or rotors or firing order (didnt think so). The ecu I can check again. the vaccum lines should all be in order but I will check again. I will check the grounds again and hopefulle switching the fuel lines will fix it. I bought the car with the motor blown up already. Then I bought the 94 motor from the junk yard. Hopefully its an early 94. I didn't mess with the timing chain at all, but it is always a possibility.

Thanks for the help so far.

Are you sure you getting Fuel ?? take some brake cleaner and spray are your trying to start. if it starts then you have a fuel delivery issue. It's possible that the injectors are clogged or have restriction in the fuel system........

I will check that tomorrow. I sprayed a little started fluid in earlier in the night and it backfired and cought fire. in the intake. That is where i knew I had a problem with the distributor. I even drained all the old gas out and replaced with fresh gas. and I know the fuel pump is working. I will chck the FP tomorrow and switch the fuel lines.

Did you at least clean the injectors and checked the resistance on them. God knows how long the engine was sitting there, and if its more than 6 months you will have major issues with injectors. What i would do is check ther resistance (should be within 12-10ohm) soak the injectors in injector cleaner for 24hours than try again. When you do get it to start make sure u add some more fuel cleaner in your gas tank. good luck.
