I have a 91 ka24de that i just recently rebuilt due to a nasty rod knock. the car ran great for the first 30 mins while i got the air out of the coolent. i slowly began bring in the rpms up little by little and when i got above 3500 i noticed some smoke coming from the exhaust side. when i got up to 5000 the engine cut out untill it got under 2000. then it wouldnt rev abouve 2000 without poping and spiting. i replaced the maf and its still doing the same thing. im not new to the 240 world but im lost on this one.. any help would be great. the car has been in my garage for 2 long

Now the only problem is that it hesitates to start and pops and spits from 1000 to 1500 rpm then smooths out fine until 4000 then sputters and wont go higher than 4000 rpm unless you feather the throttle. Anyone know what could be wrong?

The only thing not stock would be that i have a Z32 mass air flow sensor

Well theres your problem. You cant just throw a Z32 MAF on there and have it run right. You need another DOHC MAF. The Z32 you have to tune for and is usually used in turbo applications for its higher hp limit before it maxxes out.

Yup he's right, you need the stock MAF to make it run right. As far as the smoke...the previous motor may have pushed oil into the exhaust system. one option would be to take the exhaust off, and soak the internals W/ break clean. Then flush it with water, and let it dry before you put it back on. If it still smokes, your "rebuilt" motor most likely has issues.

good luck man
