Might be the timing chain making noise. If it seems to be coming mostly from the very front of the engine, up top near the valve cover it's likely to be the upper guides on the timing chain.

If so you have 2 options.1, Remove the guides. (Download the FSM first so you can see what your doing, and search the site. Guide removal has been covered before)

2. Replace the timing chain.

I got my car for a REALLY good price because i think the previous owner thought the noise from the chain was engine knock.

Hey whats up i have a 1995 240sx. But anyways i just got in my car one day on my way to school and it stated knocking not sure of what it is i pulled over and looked i thought it was just coming from the fan cause it is right there to but when i got home i had a few people listen to it to see if they could figure out what it was then we finally figured out it was coming from the engine but a am just getting ready to work on mine in a few days. So if you could tell me what your car was doing or if anyone else has had this prob. please help me thanks.

Mine did it real bad when i first got it, like i said probably why i got the car so cheap.

Even after removing the guides i still had alot of noise because the tensioner was all gummed up and wasn't doing it's job. So i had to soak it in wd40 to get it to free up and work properly.
