First of all, you guys really seem to know your stuff about these engines. Im a oval track racer and I am pretty mechanically enclined. Heres the deal, my mom ran her car hot and blew the head gasket and I want to save her some money and change it my self. I plan on getting the head magnafluxed and surfaced if needed. I dont think I will have to many problems but never messed w/ dohc before. If I bring #1 to tdc and mark all the sprockets and chains with a paint marker everything should be in time when I put it back together right? Also will I have to remove the intake to pull the head? Ive been at work for a few days and have not looked at it real close yet. Is there any tips you guys can give me? Your help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance. Also it is a 96 altima.

I use zip ties to strap the cam sprockets to the chain so timing is ok. Make sure #1 piston is up and your #1 cam lobes should face away from each other.

Ok... I decided to bring this car to someone who was going to do the job for a good price, well he had the car a month and never touched it so I went get the car and Im doing it myself. I pulled the head with no problems at all, brought number 1 up marked all sprockets and chains so I can put everything right where it was. I have a couple questions about the reinstall, I got a hell of a deal on a remaned head ready to bolt on 350$ inside connection. My question is, Is there any way to adjust the valves or do you just put the cams in and torque them down? I see no way to adjust anything, Also what are the torque specs for the caps and sprockets on the cams? I beleive the head is 68 right?

One more question, does anyone know where I could get new o rings for the distributor? They are stretched pretty bad. Thanks

the valve clearances are all made in spec with the shims located underneath each lobe on the cam. just reinstall the cams (lobes facing away from each other with #1 piston at top of stroke) and then measure the clearances with feeler gauges. tighten all the caps and work the gears and the chain on at the same time and then put the bolt in. the cam gear bolts need like 105 ft.lbs and the caps are prolly like 12 ft.lbs (i usually do it by hand).Jim Wolf's site has good cam instruction illustration to make sure you get the gears and chain and everything right. take a look at it:JWT cam instruction for KA24DE

watch out with the cams and the timing chain, l allready got a head done cause of that. while the head is out do some port & polish:) can give ya a few hp.
