I'm looking at a 92 240 with 140k on the odo but it has a head noise that isn't there all the time.

When you first start the car, there is no noise present, it takes a minute or 2 to show up. When driving, you don't hear anything under acceleration, but its there when you come to a stop. When you start to move again, the noise goes away. It SOUNDS as if its in the middle or rear of the head, and not on the timing chain end.

It is definately in the head, and not the bottom end, that much I know, but the not being there all the time part is throwing me off. I was thinking it was a sticking lifter, but hearing about all the timing chain problems here, I'm not totally sure.

Any ideas?

Pop off the valve cover and check to see if the upper chains top guide is the problem, remove it regardless.
