I just went to the DMV today and failed emissions horribly. It passed at higher rpms but was way under the limit (maybe something wrong there) and it is running super rich at idle. Here are the numbers.

MODE: Idle
HC ppm --- Standard:220 Reading:505
CO% --- Standard 1.20 Reading:2.15
CO2% --- 12.3
O2% --- 2.1

MODE: High Idle
HC ppm --- Standard:220 Reading:130
CO% --- Standard 1.20 Reading:0.65
CO2% --- 13.1
o2% --- 2.2

I mean I could always have this "fixed" and passed, but if I have a problem I would rather deal with it. My car also sounds like there's a valve tapping above 3k rpms. Ive got new plugs, new upper tensioner, new z32 fuel filter. I also seafoamed the motor on the intake and in the gas tank side.

What year car? You might be about due to change out your catalytic converter... it might not be working as well at the lower temperature ranges (idle) as it used to.

Yeah, you're probably about due. I replaced mine (way back when I had one) in my 91 in ~2003ish.
