ka24de dowel- block to head...how many are there

According to this, there are only two of these, but there are cutouts on the intake side as well that they fit into also (in the head, but the cutouts don't extend down into the block like on the exhaust side. The four cutouts in the head block are the same size as the sleeves, and so are the two on the intake side of the cylinder block). I didn't realize they were there until I got my head back from the machinist...there was one still in the head when I got it back and I had found one on the floor of my garage. Do I only need to put these on the exhaust side? The description (Dowel - head to block) leads me to think I should expand them and push halfway into the cylinder block so the other half fits up into the head block. What is the purpose of these?Thanks,TravisD
