Wondering if anyone knows the answer to this.

I have a chance at getting a sr20det with a whole in the block and everything on it ecu wires etc. Its stock redtop nothing too special but its got lots of good parts and I'm getting it in exchange for swapping it in.

So this got me thinking. I got a Ka24de infact I got more than one KA I've been thinking about building one of them.

Is it possible to use the CAS from the SR as far as I know the SR20de uses the same Distributor as the KA24de furthermore I sold a SR20de car to my friend and when we did tune up we used the distributor cap from a KA and they even had the same firing order.

I don't fully understand ECU I suppose but it seems like all it does is regulate how much fuel to squirt in so why can't you just use the ECU from a sr20det on a KA24de they seem to be a way too similar same firing order and people use the ka24de wiring on a sr20de

I mean even the intakes are shaped the same way and have lots of the same senors a similar compression ratio.

Kinda the way I think if you use all the SR sensors isn't it computer wise just like a stroked SR the computer can't tell??? Am I defining ECU as oversimplified or is it really something simple like I'm thinking. I mean its just a carb replacement in some sense.

I might try it or I might sell the whole redtop to my friend that bought the SR20de from me. but I think a little info might help me decide what I will do.

Just because some parts may be interchangeable doesnt mean that all parts are. People use a modified KA harness for the SR. I doubt the CAS is the same, and I'm pretty positive the ECU wont work correctly in a KA powered car. These are two different engines with what I have to assume are two different power curves, timing and fuel maps that just arent going to be compatible.

The ECU has to interpret all the data from the sensors and uses that info to run the engine. I'm sure the sensors between the two are different, so there would be different voltages flowing to the ECU telling the ECU to do different things. Dont think it would work well.

yea your probably right.

The distributor works great from the non turbo SR(s13) and the KA and the same firing order and distributor cap and the wire harness is hardly modified.

So thats what got me thinking that way. But power-curve has gotta be different I wounder then if a Tuner couldn't correct those differences???Maybe thats who I should really talk to.

I probably won't do it but it would be cool just for the heck of it. do something different.

I suppose it may work with a complete flash, but it's just not close to worth it. For something that's only to be done for bragging rights, it's not too impressive. I would say sell all that stuff and buy some crazy engine, anything that will fit in the engine bay. Then do all the custom fab work. That, my friend, is very impressive.

Ya I hear ya. lolz my big problem these days is $$$ right now I'm in school for Engineering and Fabrication so I'm always broke right now.

Something I haven't seen yet and would like to try is a BMW M52 (becuase its simpler electronics) or even M54

The 2.8l 6cyl makes about 200hp/200tq and wieghs 350lbs (alum block version) vs the KA 371lbs the rb(20,25) 550ish the jzs 500ish and the LS1 450lbs

Its like a SR with a whole lot more potential assuming it fits in there with a turbo.

Thing is I reckon I can get a totalled out BMW mid 90s rather cheap too maybe $1,000 range and I can eventually fab everything. I usto build wire harnesses beleive it or not back in high school so thats no problem for me just have a tuner wipe out the EWS (safety)

If I want to spend more then I could get a M54 which would be a beast especially with a turbo but I bet the electronics would be crazy.

Anyways for right now I need to just keep the car mechanically sound untill I get some real bank going on.

Besides I got my interior torn apart and need to finish that up its getting old driving with no door panels or seatbelts hahaha.
