I've read on here that you can use a ka24de alt on a ca18det as long as you put the ca18det front cover on. A few questions though....

Which year ka24de?

Does the ca-det alt. wiring plugs swap over to the ka alt, or do you have to cut and splice?

How hard is it to get the front cover off? I assume you have to pull the pulley off with a puler?

Anything else to make it work?

I think my ca alt is crapping out. I'm averaging 12.8-12.9 volts at cruise speeds. :ohno:

Thanks

from what I've read here - the KA alt is no good, as it eats the wires from the inside or smthn like that, due to the cover swap. Check the crossparts reference in the CA section.

you might as well want to get a maxima or quest alt. I've heard those produce more output but don't know nor have seen any installed on the 240sx. Anyway, that's what I'd go with.

Thats where I read it can be done.....

Text taken directly from the crossover reference sticky........

"The alternator from a KA24DE can be used on a RWD CA18DET by simply swapping the front cover from the CA's alternator to the KA alternator's body"

yep...but if you search more on this topic you'll find someone said that it's no good swapping the covers.

I also read on zilvia (http://zilvia.net/f/chat/102960-ca18det-alternator.html) that someone use to make custom brackets...sounds great but couldn't find any additional info.

try cleaning some of the connections at the alternator in the mean time while you look for another alternator or a substitute. That helped me out alot last year when mine was crapping out, needless to say im still using the same one!

btw, you can also get it rebuilt.

Yeah...if no one can confirm the ka alt works without issues then I'll just get mine rebuilt.

whether it will help you or not im not sure. im using a ca18de. i had some issues getting an alternator and im now using a ka24de alt. i didnt swap the cover just left the ka face on it. i can say its been running great. though mine is not turbo the ribs matched with the ca18de with having 3 ribs. i believe HICAS models came with 4 ribs. anyways theres my two cents ka24de has been working for me. :)

Get it rebuilt and save yourself the possible failure.

I need to correct it. I'll do it now. The guy that said it worked ended up having it fail a month or two later. Something is different between the covers and it ate up the bearing or the windings or something.
