When I pulled the vc off my KA to do the cam swap, this is what I found.

These pics were taken IMMEDIATELY after pulling the cover off:

That's shiny. I wonder if mine's anywhere near that clean...218000 miles and oil changed every 2k miles or so.

Looks as clean as my Buick GN did when I pulled the engine down for modifying. What kind of oil do you use??

wow, that is clean, im also interested in the oil used in it. synthetic?

i did a timing chain on an alty once that was poorly taken care of, at least 1mm of sludge all over everything and enough sludge to clog the pickup tube

I was lucky that my KA was apparently well cared for by the prior owner. It wasn't quite as clean as Greg's engine, but it was pretty damn clean. No sludge.

I started off using Valvoline Durablend and have since moved to Synpower. Heard good things about the detergent additives in Valvoline products.

That, believe it or not, is a Pennzoil engine from day 1.

I will be switching to mobil 1 next oil change in order to make sure it stays intact.

I guess that goes to show, barring engine design flaws, if you follow the change interval appropriate for the oil you're running (synthetic or conventional), you too can have an engine clean enough to eat off of...well, except for the carcinogens in the oil. On second thought, try not to eat off of the engine.
