Well, your friend is wrong, it's not magically more efficient because it's on a higher displacement engine. X amount of Fuel + Y amount of air makes Z amount of power, regardless of your engine size (technically, smaller engines would make more in the end since they have lighter reciprocating parts, but that's a negligable difference).
The real reason to choose a KA over a SR is partially the displacement though. You can make the same power at lower RPMs with less boost. Also, it's cheaper and easier to turbo a KA than to swap in an SR. Oh, and the KA will spool the turbo slightly faster, due to the higher displacement.
