my car used to idle fine but now when i start it, it goes to about 1500 rpm's and stays there for a second or two then slowly goes lower to 1000, 800, 500 and it'll keep going until it dies. The car shuts off within 10 second after starting it. Most of the time though i have to rev it when it's about to stall out...i rev it once to get it alive again, then again, two or three times before it stays at 1500. i don't know what the problem is and why my car idles so high, i've even failed emissions and don't know what the problem is. i've taken the aiv out and i've heard of people having problems with the egr and the tps, idle screw but i don't know where those are located. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Idle screw is located at the back of your intake manifold. You might want to take it off and hose it down with carb cleaner. The other problem might be with your egr. Your egr is located at the back of the motor and is a pain to work on. It's under the gold saucer shaped thing called your bpt. Also you should replace your vac lines...especially between your bpt to your egr. many of your vac lines are very old now if you haven't replaced them and could cause something like that. I doubt it's your tps. Another thing to check for your high idle is your coolant temp sensor. If that's corroded your ecu's gonna think that it's still cold and will keep you in fast idle mode.

try cleaning the AACV and IAC unit..if you want to test if it's the EGR, then disconnect the line between EGR and BPT and cap off the nipples.

sometimes there's dirt build up as well in the metal vac lines..

which part of the SMOG test did you fail in?

yes and the numbers for your smog check would be a good idea too.

i can't seem to find my emissions papers at the moment but if i can remember correctly i failed the carbon monoxide portion, i believe i did fine on the hydrocarbons...i'll look around some more to see if i can find them and i'll get back to ya.
