Does anybody have any links to how this is done, what benefits or losses there will be etc? My sr transmission has 2 synchros heading out the door and needs to be replaced and somebody told me to swap in my old ka transmission!

Just the bellhousings are different. You need to swap internals from the KA to the SR.

How hard is that to do? I mean what is involved. Are there any websites with documentation on how this is done or what not! are there any losses at all, maybe top speed or gearing or are they identacle?

From what I hear only 5th is different. Swapping the internals is probably no easy task.

People keep saying switching the bellhousings but what does that consist of? and how hard would it be for someone that installed the motor themselves and has a decent understanding of mechanics, and a little help from real mechanics if necesary?

if you can install a motor you can do it. Its bolts and a c-ring

I have never pulled a transmission apart, but if there are no parts that require some special tools or abilities or knowledge to do then i can probably handle it!

As cyber said its simple c rings and some bolts and you'r done. Take a look in the fsm at the exploded view of the transmission, its not hard to figure out. Here's a pic of the transmission with the bell housing off. And the 5th gear being different is misinformation. A turbo Sr's transmission has the same ratio's as the ka but the non turbo cars have a different 5th. Since the trans is not always imported with the motor sometimes a na trans can accidently be substituted. The only drawback is that the ka's input shaft necks down very slightly after the splines on the input shaft so its a tiny bit weaker but unless your busting out huge power theres no worry and from what i understand if you can break one the true sr one will break too.

Thanx, that is what i needed to know. Any clue as to an estimation on how long it might take me to get it done?

i blew my SR trans. im using ka trans with sr bellhousing setup. no you do not have to swap internals. why would u want to swap internals if the one in your SR are messed up already? an impact gun will be helpfull because its hard to break the bolts loose and hold the transmission still while using a breaker bar. remove input shaft bearing retainer(quill- thing that throw out bearing rides on). theres a paper gasket u need to replace there ($3) its a good idea to replace the bearings and rear outputshaft seal too. dont remember the prices. bell housing was difficult to separate. get a block of wood to protect bell housing, and hammer to separate. where sr bell housing meets back half of trans, theres no gasket, use RTV, but use it sparingly. mate ur SR bellhousing to ka trans. took me 1 hour to replace in and out of car.

Hey guys just 1 last question on this topic.

I ran into the same problem, my SR's 1st & 2nd gear syncros are bad and am about to trade a guy my Kouki tails for KA24E transmission plus $100. First thing I need to know is:

Is the KA24E transmission the same as the KA24DE transmission?

Thanks,

Eric
