KA threw a rod, but why?

The motor had damn near perfect compression, 170 accross the board. The motor pulled strong and from what I'm told by the previous owner the motor was rebuilt at 100k. Yes I know, you can't always believe that without documentation, but even still considering the condition of it.

I was driving the car extremely hard just before it blew, but that shouldn't matter. A few minutes after I took it for a spin in an empty parking lot, I was on the highway and started to lose power. As I was slowing down to about 2k RPM the steering went out (which is weird because motor was running, so steering should still work) then I looked down and the check engine light was on. After that, I pretty much lost all power and pulled over on the side of the highway. I started it back up and it had a metal against metal sound and it idle'd extremely rough. Waited awhile, then after realizing that was my only way of getting home (cell phone didn't work, and was kinda far from civilization) I started it again and it had an extremely bad knock coming from the motor. Long story short I had it towed.

I'm now putting a new ka24de in, replacing that one, and my question is, what is the possibility of the oil pump going out? If the oil pump is bad, won't that cause the new motor to go as well?

Damn, nevermind. I just found out the oil pump is in the motor haha. No need to worry about that since the new motor will have a new oil pump in it anyway. Still kind of curious though what you guys think may have caused the motor to throw a rod?

oil pump is on the front cover. there are many reasons ppl throw rods. not enough oil pressure... bearings gave out... excessive high RPMs... etc.
