In response to this thread: zer...44874

and this picture:

Are those SR Coil packs?

It's on the federal tires S13 at FD Round 3. I was talking to a guy about that KA-T in the stands and he said that some people in Cali. (he was from there) use chipped SR ECUs to make KA-T's out there and just make a custom harness adapter. so then in theory if you were using the SR ECU using SR coil packs would be a breeze. He didn't know if that's how they did it for sure but the explanation makes sense.

Was his explanation right possibly?

Yea thats one way to do it. Your doing a lot of work and still being stuck with a stock ECU though. Some guys do that with a Power-FC.

Its more likely done with a stand alone however.

No MAF sensor, so it's 99% a standalone. Most likely AEM, and those are AEM coils.

Listening to the crowd at Formula D is like hitting yourself in the head. Yeah, it might effective for SOMETHING, but not for making something work right

True at a race level it's probably more likely that they used a stand alone. I was just impressed to see a KA-T running at FD. I'd assume that the SR ECU route is more likely to be used on the streets.

I bought my turbo from a dude who's running LS1 coils on his car. He is using an AEM unit though.

I'm sure there would be some benefit, but for the time involved in figuring out the wiring and configuration, i'm not sure if it would really be worth it unless your going for crazy high horse in a racing application.

Any time you increase spark output your going to see engine performance gains. More MPG's, hp/TQ, ect ect. With coil packs you can run a much bigger gap.

The gains are bigger O/C when your going for high HP, however you would see gains on a stock motor with a COP setup Vs. stock. Is it worth the time and effort to go through all that if your making under 350-400? Prly not, but you'll still see performance gains.

well that's really what i was trying to say.Not many of us from the forum are making enough power to spend the time/money to actually do a COP setup for a KA.

There was multiple KA-Ts at the event, both on the track and in the spectator lot.

Doing the work for using the coils with an SR ECU but retaining the MAF sensor seems kind of stupid to me. I'd rather keep the current coil and go MAP sensor first...

I've seen people use the CBR coils with AEM as well...personally...f*** that.
