If you were running around 7 psi on a stand alone fuel management. if you were to get the car smogged, besides removing the turbo and all that stuff, would you have to do anything to the stand alone before taking it to the test. This is on a California dyno smog.

you'd have to remove the standalone.

standalone = fail.

i guess you could stick all the stock sensors back in, hide the standalone ecu, and go do hours of dyno tuning to get it within stock specs (or better).

but for 7psi.. why standalone?

The car in question is for sale and I was thinking of buying it, but the car is in need of smog and the guys selling it wants to sell the car without smogging it. I wanted to know how much trouble it would be to bring the car back to being able to pass the visual test. The ecu is a Jim Wolf and Im didnt really want to have to get some dyno time and tune the car so that it would pass smog and than have to tune the car back to where it was with the turbo. I was hoping to find some one who has gone through the same thing. :) Thanks for the reply.

a jim wolf ecu is not a stand alone. depending what its tuned for it might not be too hard to return it to stock specs. say its tuned for 370cc injectors so then get stock injectors and a stock ecu.

You can remove the turbo parts and run the 370cc injectors. I doubt the smog guys will be able to tell since the only visual difference on the 370 injectors is the color. The car should pass the sniffer part of the test if everything is running right. You will need to make sure all the smog parts are in. I do know of one person who ran a JWT 50lb set-up without the turbo installed and passed no problems. Off boost, the ECU probably runs close to stock parameters, or perhaps it might even run slightly advanced timing and leaner fuel than stock.

a JWT tuned for boost wont run leaner, or with more timing than stock. boost + adv timing = boom :P im positive jwt tunes rich too. borrow someones stock ecu to pass..

I passed Vancouver BC smog WITH the JWT turbo program & 370 injectors, EGR in place, and a stock (original 91) cat. The test includes the dyno cruise & idle tests.

You missed my point. Off-boost, or more correctly, at lower airflow rates, it could run a bit leaner and more advanced timing. Gives more off-boost power. This should already occur in a good tuning map to some extent, but I'm talking about relative to the stock mapping. I mean, what would be the point of running such a rich mixture at low airflow rates(those similar to normally aspirated airflow rates). Running the same A/F ratios off-boost would lead to very poor gas mileage.

As far as borring an ECU, chances are the JWT will have been tuned for larger injectors and perhaps a higher capacity MAF. To make a stock ECU work, you would have to swap the stock MAF and injectors back in. Kind of a hassle when the JWT tune should pass smog anyways.

^ yeah maybe, i dont really know how jwt tunes.. it cant be too dead on tho, as its kinda a universal tune.. maybe tho *shrugs*

so the only way to pass emission test is to turn your car back to N/A, pass the test, then reinstall the manifold, turbo, fmic, injectors, etc. Seems like a lot of work. If you ran very low boost, say 0-1 psi, reinstalled the stock injectors, would your emissions be close enough to stock to pass?

Even if you passed the emissions test, you would fail the visual in California as there are no CARB legal turbo kits for the 240sx.

As it was already stated: no. People have passed with the JWT ECU tune and will continue to. Even if you could run very low boost (you can't because very few wastegates run that low, unless you propped the wastegate open or something) installing stock injectors will cause the car to not run right due to a tune for larger injectors. So you would have to switch out computer and injectors and get the wastegate to run a very very low boost.

The easiest way is to find a small shop that will "pass" you regardless for some cash.

I assume if you had a JWT tune, you could just go to the dyno with an AFC and tune your low throttle maps for good emissions, thye will never even see the high throttle maps because they only idle and cruise.

One of my best friends lives in PA. If your gonna diss a state, let it be New York. That place is ghettooooo. An ex was from there. I'll never date another New Yorker. EVER.

California sucks. Plain and simple. We get watered down gas, high taxes, high smog requirements, and everything else negative u can think of. :(

If it weren't for the beaches and the weather, who would live here?

Damn I'm glad I don't live in CA. Most places here don't even look under the hood, much less check emmisions. All they care about is if your lights all work and if your tires don't look like slicks.

I know a shady smog place. But for those people who don't have connections, it's a tough place to be.

And dayem there have been ALOT of cops on the road lately. I can't go 5 miles without seeing 5 different cop cars on the streets.

All the streets my friends and I use to use are no ways now. No matter what time of night. I tell ya. The high schoolers really killed it for the rest of us. Literally. :(

im sure if you make yourself familiar with the car folk in your area they would be able to tell you where to go and just get it "passed". its how things are done here in nyc. i don't think it's right for NA cars to pollute, but if you got a performance machine...shoot..find a loophole.

I have to tell you guys this story. One night me and my friends went out on wed. went to krispy cream and there was a few people so we stayed. We looked around i was boored the goth eclipse team showed up. Retarded was in my mind. Then my friend asked this dude that acted like he watched to much Fast & Furious. I am serious he almost quoted some lines from the damn movie. My friend asked " do you race"? him:"do you have any money?" Friend:"what do you have under the hood?" him: You never ask a street racer what he has under his hood.... I was just like supprised ... i almost fell on the ground laughing.

When he said he rebuild the motor i was like ok... He took it for a spin... When he turned it on all you could hear is his farty exhaust noise. YOU COULD NOT HEAR HIS ENGINE EXCEPT ****. It is a Prelude with a no h22 its way to quiet.

When you said high school kids ruined street racing it is true

:(

Granted, I was very excited getting my license and to go driving and everything. Use to go EVERYWHERE. Friends wanted a lift, no problem. Just as long as it gave me an excuse to drive my car. ( A lowly 1990 Pontiac Grand AM LE Sedan Automatic UGH!) But I NEVER thought it was all that. Friends of my dad's all owned Mustang GT's, Cobras, Z28 Camaros, etc. Heck he's owned 13 corvettes in his lifetime. :)

Then again I guess I just grew up in a different environment. Kids nowadays, throw on a fart can and say they got the fastest car in school. So what that it's a stock Civic DX with like 100 hp. haha

My last car was a 93' Pontiac Grand AM GT w/ the 5spd and H.O. 4cyl. 175hp and 155lb of torque(flywheel mind u) She was a fun car. I use to "race" against the old 5.0 mustangs just to see them run. I knew I didn't stand a chance in holy hell but I loved to see a superior car perform. Afterwards I'd give them the thumbs up and say thanks for the fun.

Umm.. DAMN I wrote alot. Sorry guys. haha Just me rambling. Just remembering good times.
