THIS IS NOT A DEBATE!!!!!!!!!

This is for all you KA*/SR* guys. (Without anyone jumping on the bandwagon like i think im going to see...)

In 4 sentences or less, Why did you pick your engine platform.

Was it SO JDM you had to have it?
Is it because it drops panties?
BECAUSE RACECAR?

In my old 240...

92 Hatch, KADET. Reason i picked it was because it was already in there, and parts were available down the street and not overnight from japan. 2.4 is bigger then 2.0... So without killing to many braincells thinking about, you should be able to piece together a turbo kit and make more power then the SR, even stock for stock. If i wanted a 2L of fail i would of gotten a DSM or a Diet Mr. Pibb :chuckle:

EDIT** i relieze its 2012 and KA/SR has been covered time in and time out. Frankly im sick of the arguments from a nissan guy since 05.. But again this is not a debate. Just a logical reasoning WHY you picked, what you picked.

And i leave you all with this.

KA:

Cam in bucket.
Much superior rod to stroke ratio.
A powerband.
Cheaper parts.
Availability.
Don't need to mess with wiring.

I picked my first SR because i wanted to try something else. I never did much with my KA besides spec flywheel/clutch,LSD and an exhaust and i had alot of fun with that when i was in high school but i had heard the crazy stories of how sweet and sought after the sr20det was so i wanted to give it a shot. I also knew nothing about turbo'ing a vehicle so it seemed simple. I only had dial up internet connection and i didnt even know what a forum was at that point and time. I had friend that had a connection to performance shop in a nearby state so i bought the engine and they included printed papers for me on the wiring and steps to complete the swap. So old school compared to the way i do things now. I have everything i would ever need to know on just about any swap in PDF on my computer along with links after links of useful and useless material lol.

I have a hidden urge to build a 300-400hp KA and i have one at my shop that i keep around just incase i make the impulsive decision to do so.

KA's dont have a high rpm range like the SR and the crank is not fully counter weighted. That is my only problem with the motor other than that, i would take a dang KA-T over an SR anyday but only if i had the time and money to do it right. I believe a well put together KA-T would make any man wash dishes after a quick go around thru the gears.

^^ Agree. Harmonics is what kills the KA.

BC does make a FCW for the KA though, so expensive :(.

That is true, it is way out of my league to spend that kind of money on just the crank at this point and time of my life. Maybe when im retired, ill sell the wifes caddy and have the grandson over for a little schooling on what gramps has under his belt.

SR

Main reason i went with it was reliability and cost. My KA like most on here was well past 100K, with the cost of a rebuild/buying a turbo kit vs getting a lower mileage motor that was actually designed to run with a turbo it was kind of a no brainer.
Parts wernt an issue b/c after searching most common parts are available at the local parts store, other items might take a day or 2 shipping but thats been rare for me.

KA-T

Mainly because I like building things. Plus, my car came with a KA so I want it to have a KA. Sure I'll build something crazy later, but that will be a different car. My vert will always be KA powered. also, replacement parts are easier to find, KAs are easy to find for cheap, and overall support is better for them in the US. And I like having more displacement.

KA-T

It ran good, it was in good condition, I didn't have to pull engines or redo wiring.

I chose the SR because I wanted reliability and fuel economy. What I got was a piece of sh** that has cost me more money than most have in their rb25 setup.

I can say that the whole month that it ran I got really good gas mileage, better than the ka. Other than that, biggest mistake I ever made.

SR because when i got my car the ka was blown. Ive never looked back and love my motor. But if i had a car with a well running healthy ka id keep it and boost it.
Both great platforms in my opinion.

My man pretty much summed it up.

I wanted to build a quarter mile car, so I chose the KA for more low end. Granted, with my Precision 6031 I'm gonna be looking at some lag down bottom, can't wait to feel it when I hit my goal of ~23psi or so though.

Yep.

Note to people going KA-T. Skip the wussy 370cc injectors. I'm nearly maxing them out at 8psi on an S15 T28. :argh

Option 3, CA18! LOL
Weight vs. physical size, great valve train design, parts availability, and I like to do things a little differently. It's been a great motor for me and I have no regrets.

Anything bigger than 370cc's.
I'm at 92% duty cycle at 6300 rpm at 8 psi on my 370s.

A CA18 would've been my 2nd pick, they are super neat engines!

Being that's I've only owned an s14 and it was for such a short period, I have no doubts in my mind I would have gone with KA-T. The simple fact is that as much as I like motors that come factory-boosted, I just think there is more of an allure to motors that you have to boost yourself.
