Honing the cylinder bores puts a microscopic crosshatching on the bores. It is done with a tool that has polishing stones on it. The angle of the crosshatching varies with the type of material used in the rings. This crosshatching is what the new rings initially wear against to provide final ring seating.

If the bores are straight and do not show excessive wear, you can just do a simple crosshatching job and use new rings. Cheaper than a rebore and new pistons.

Unless of course, you are buying new oversize pistons anyway. Heh.

just something to think about, when you rebuilt your engine the first time, did you use rebuild pistons and have your block honed to fit them? Thats usually what a full rebuild entails.. Make sure you didnt bore that much over, and that it's less than .20 over so that you can actually bore and FIT the Ross pistons you were lookin at... Know what I mean?
