Ok, here's a long one. I have a 91 240 with 142k on the engine. Last week something screwed up. I was testing my speed limiter and it cut at 113 and went down to about 95. Soon after that I tried to accelerate, but couldn't. BTW I did not exceed 5500 RPMs. The speed continued to go down until my car turned off (dash lights on, lost power steering). (I think my alternator may be going out too... and I didn't think to turn off the radio.) I parked on the side of the road and attempted to start the car again. After ten minutes of attempts and a rest it fianlly started again, only this time with a banging noise. Under any acceleration it sounds like a machine gun is firing within the engine. At any rate; the engine runs and the car drives, it just has that horrible noise. It doesn't even seem to run roughly. I've heard guesses ranging from a blown piston to a thrown rod, but nothing educated. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me can pinpoint the problem instantly. Let me know if you have any ideas.

probly just hearing your lifters tapping, and stock oil pump doesn't work good in upper rpms, so it probly didn't give it oil, but check your oil and fill it up if u need to

I checked the oil and it was a little low. I refilled it and the condition is still the same, if not just a little quieter.

my man, the first thing you need to try to do is turn the crank over by hand. you need a big ratchet, and i think a 27mm socket. Put the socket on the crank pulley nut. Turn the motor over. It helps a lot if you have turned the motor over before, or you have another motor to compare it to. If it is ridiculously hard ( like you have one hell of a time moving it a few degrees) you prolly spun a bearing, most likely a rod bearing.

I recently rebuilt a head, reinstalled it, ran it for a lil while and then drove it home. The next morning when i fired it up i heard a belt squeek, but i dont have any squeeky belts. then after i take off a little i hear what seems like the piston is slapping against the cylinder, and my performance sucks. Spun a bearing, say bye bye bottom end

this happened with my 240 not long ago and everyone told me to check my oil and that it may be a piston. which is all true, btw i have 90 240 with 141K miles on it. when i took it to the shop he said it was an exhaust leak from the engine and the head gasket was loose. hopefully that will help you.

No, it doesn't sound small - its beginning to sound more and more like a swap. I'll go ahead and try the mechanic section, though. Thanks everyone.
