over the winter my heat wasnt getting very hot so i automatically thought it was the thermostat. it over heated shortly after so i added coolant and it was good for a few months. now this morning im driving and the temp gauge is way past H and coolant is bubbling over the reservoir. sounds like the thermostat???

It could be sticking, yes. However, make absolute sure that there are no air pockets in the system. The 240SX is one of the most troublesome and prone to having this problem. The best way I've found to completely bleed the system is to actually jack the front end up a bit and do it that way. Search and you'll find numerous posts about bleeding it properly.

also check for minor leaks and such things like that...

when does it start to over heat? at a stop, on the HWY, ect.?

Mine did that once upon a time. I changed the thermastat and it went well for about a month or so. The problem then resurfaced. I did a complete flush, changed the thermostat again, and ran a sealer just in case. Again problem solved . . . for about a month. Bubbling and overheating returned each time. Come to find out I had a warped head. Had the head rebuilt only to blow the gasket completely two weeks later. The #4 cylinder was steam cleaned to look brand new from this. Ended up replacing the motor so be careful since your gauge went all the way to the top. Don't remember the exact degrees but it's hotter than what your engine is supposed to ever run. Keep a close eye on it especially no that it's almost summer time.

well now after about a week its running a little hotter than usual. i checked my coolant and there was none in the reservoir. i opened the rad cap and a bunch of steamed poured out but i didnt see any fluid. i did notice there were drip marks on my garage floor. i cant see where the drips are coming from but there is some dried up fluid on the plastic piece under the fan. I seriously have no idea anymore and I really hope I didn't screw up my HG

My radiator had a crack on plastic top that leaks only under pressure (about 10-15 mins driving). I had to fix it with 2-1 Steel-Mixed Cold-weld. (rated 500'F)

i dont see a crack anywhere on top of the radiator. when i rev the car, there seems to be drips on the floor underneath the waterpump. could it be leaking?

i had that leak... but on my case it would only do it when i ran it hard and then parked.. drips start falling...

till i was in a drive thru jack n box and it started to heat up! every time i gave it gas it would cool down... well i left the jack... made it home...

one of my hoses had a lil crack and under pressure it would open... till this time it stayed open... it ended up bieng my bypass hose..

i jacked the car up and saw that it was dripping off of the underdrive pulley. not sure where the source of it is.

Possibly your Waterpump. If you replace it check your fan-clutch at the same time.

ey, so i just read everything and I fall right in here...

My 240 overheats and coolant is dripping from the bottom now. Apparently I am also burning coolant through the heads or something. It hasnt overheated for a few weeks now, but its only a matter of time.

whats the first thing i should do?

check where its leaking (ie right under the pulleys, under the reservoir). that should help pin point where the leak is. is your car taking in a lot of coolant. if so, how often to you fill the coolant reservoir. if your car blows out cool air even when the heat is on, its probably a thermostat. also bleed the system by jacking up the front, turning on the car and running it w/o the rad cap on. watch to see if any bubbling occurs. this may take 30 min or more.

I would fill it as often as i could, but then i noticed that the reservoir would empty out the next day. There isnt a leak in the reservoir and i wouldnt see anything under the car after a long park, it just disappears! I check under the cap in the radiator, and its full, but the res is empty. So now i fill/check it every week or two. As for the air, it takes about two min to get the hot air going, and it does get hot.

and what does bleeding the system do?

it gets the air out of the heating system. KA's are known for this and they can cause over heating. my car did the same thing as yours, i just took it to my mechanic to make sure and he said it was the water pump, so i replaced it and its all good.

Thats exactly what it was, the water pump.thats what mine did. But on top of that it got so hot, it blew the head gasket.soi'd double check on ur temp just in case.

check ur exhaust smoke, is it white, blue, black, or nothing is seen.

If so, ur fine.any color, and ur head gasket could be blown, or damaged.

I had to replace my water pump because it was bent in a head on accident. The fan and fan clutch had to be changed too. I would've changed the thermostat too had I known it was a cheap part. But mine is still working fine.
