hello all. this question pertains to those of you who are thinking of getting a manual transmission from a donor vehicle or private party seller.

i just recently finished 7 SR swaps within last week, and i now have 10 KAs in my backyard along with 4 JDM front clips. some of these motors came with a manual transmission. well a friend of mine was asking if he could have a transmission from me for playa price. so i hooked him up with a DOHC KA transmission. however, upon further inspection, although it shifted smoothly, we noticed there was some play in the input shaft. i wasnt sure if the play was up to spec, but i didnt want to rip him off, so i gave him back his $100 and decided to hold off on selling it until i know exactly how much play this transmission is supposed to have.

my Manual transmission teacher told me that the transmission input shaft is no good and should be replaced. however, this was done just by eyeballing and wiggling the input shaft. BUT some other student techs at my school say that its okay to have some play. so could somebody give me the input shaft specs before i consider trashing or possibly rebuilding the transmission.

another concern i have is say i do have to rebuild the transmission, how much would it cost for a quality rebuild kit and exactly what brand? ive rebuilt a few transmissions in the past with no problems.

if not, expect me to sell some gearsets from KAs. har har.

i have never seen a 240 transmission with no input shaft play even on low miles. there will never be any play at all i can tell you that for sure...at least on rwd nissan transmission. Since input shaft is so much longer on rwd transmission they need to have higher clearances since it will flex bit more which is another reason rwd trannies use pilot bushings and a lot of fwd dont. i am not sure how correct i am but i think iam close. this is what one of my instructiors told me a while back. anyway i got a complete bearing rebuild kit thats made in japan that i can sell you at nice price. just email me at [email protected] ill get you pics and all.

There should be NO noticeable play.Too much play is a key factor when troubleshooting a bad mainshaft input bearing. The input shaft is a 2 piece part, that slides into the mainshaft
