Hey, I just recently got a 92 240sx not too long ago, and it constantly overheats.. At first the lower radiator hose needed to be replaced so I did that.. Then, I changed out the T-stat.. Yes, with the valve at 12 o clock. Then the water pump.. Then one day it leaked all over the ground, so I searched for the leak, and it was the most complicated bypass hose ever known to man. If it wasn't for me having such small hands, I wouldn't have been able to change it without taking the thing next to the engine off.. Im a girl, so bear with me here.. All of these things and it STILL overheats.. Yes I bled the system.. I let the car running with the cap off for 20 minutes, and added more and more fluid to it until no more air pockets.. I test drove it, and at the top of my hill there is a light, i sat there n it slowly rose up to H.. I turned on the ac full blast and it slowly went back down.. I checked for necessary blown head symptoms such as, oil in the water, water leaking from exhaust and smoke.. Nothing.. HELP!!

This is a link to several threads on over-heating issues. Hope this helps.

Doesn't sound like you bled it. Did you have something like a 2 liter bottle with the bottom cut off, upside down sticking out of the fill neck? When I bleed I do that and fill it half way, and run it until its warm, then open the bleeder valve, close valve wait a few secs and keep repeating. Then shut it off, pull off my gerry rigged soda bottle and get the cap on.

this sentence is screaming bad fan at me. I've had the clutch on my belt driven fan break before and this leads to overheating when the car isn't moving(as you basically have no fan). However the electric AC fan might be enough to cool the radiator, which could be why turning on the AC dropped the temp.

However if that fan is gone then this theory's shot.

The problem without a doubt is your clutch fan. I know this because you say it got hot when stopped. Therefore, when the vehicle is moving and air is flowing through the rad it is staying cool. When you stop there is less air passing through the rad and it is heating up. When you turn on the a/c the condenser fan turns on and the car starts to cool... Obviously, and without a doubt the clutch fan...

these guys are right. make ssure the clutch fan is working if not replace it or switch to e fans. if that doesnt work make sure the system is bled properly

System sounds like its bled just fine. The car doesnt overheat while driving only at a stop right? If that is the case, then just order a new fan clutch.

Ok, so ya'll think it's the fan clutch, and not bled right.. I guess i'll change that out next.. By the time I get done, the whole daggone cooling system is going to be brand new.. Oh, and another thing, I did happen to notice, that when I have the car on, both fans are spinning.. The electric, and the clutch fan or whatnot.. When it starts to overheat, I turn on the ac full blast, and the air is coming out cool.. It takes a while for the engine to cool back down after I turn the ac on as well.. So since the clutch fan is at a constant on from the moment I start the car, does that mean it does need to be replaced? Because it is working I know that much.. And the electric fan kicks on when I turn on the ac.. Are there any sensors I should check? And how would I check them?

Get some electric fans, relay, and do a flush, maybe a T stat too

I was ganna say fan cluthes too from that sentence. Just because its spinning doesnt mean its spinning fast enough. The actual clutches are worn and it could be slipping. I wouldnt say airpockets because it does get cool with the ac fan on. so that shows its flowing. I would bleed it again just to be safe. Also if its low when you first open the cap, look for another leak..

if you rebleed the system again make sure that the heat is turned on and use the bleeder screen to let any air out of the system.

oh wow, how dumb do I feel, I didn't know there was a bleeder valve.. Is it apparently where the upper rad hose is on the engine, or next to maybe? I thought if I just run the engine for 20 mins n keep adding rad fluid to it, that that was how to bleed it.. I ran it until I didn't see no more air bubbles in it though.. Jesus, I think when I change out the fan clutch I will most definately bleed it correctly as well.. Thank you guys..

hey, also when you have your a/c running it puts a load on the engine as well. so while it may be cool, the engine's working harder. and to help keep it cool until you determine what the right problem is, turn your heater all the way up and use it as an extra radiator, windows down. it maybe uncomfortable, but it'll help from warping, cracking, or other disastrous engine failures.

well, i changed out the fan clutch.. It seems to be fine thus far thank goodness.. However, the antifreeze seems to be getting so hot it boils still.. What could that be from?

take the t-stat out and run it with out. if it stops, its a bad t-stat. it maybe new but it's possible to have a bad one. I've been workin in a parts store for five years now. i've seen done. if it doesn't boil over w/o the t-stat replace it. preferably w/ a fail-safe if available.
