Is the block and crank from a FWD KA powered car the same as a KA powered RWD? I know the head is different just wondering about the block and crank. I can pick up a KA short block out of a '97 Altima for FREE. I dont have the motors side by side so I cant tell if they are the same.

Thanx

well if its free, pick it, and find out how different they are.

On a side note, There are some minor differences, the million dolor question is: are these difference small enough to have these engines interchangeable (direct swap)?

and how is this a KAT question?

I believe the transmission bolt holes are different.

if anyone would know the answer to this question, it'd be deviousKA. hopefully, he'll chime in when he gets a chance.Quote »and how is this a KAT question?[/quote]if he's doing a KAT buildup, then it's cool.

I did pick it up. Its at my shop now. Tomorrow I will put it next to my spare block and check out the differences if any. I cant imagine that Nissan would cast two different blocks but would instead make bosses and mounts that could be used in either (all) applications. The Toyota 2JZ block is set up externally the same for NA v TT. Any block will bolt into IS300, MKIV Supra, GS300, SC300. There are bosses for positioning the motor mounts in different spots. But who knows, maybe Nissan doesnt do things this way.

I am sorry this isnt directly related to a turbo question. I have never posted in the KA (NON T) forum and didnt even think twice about posting here. I also think that members that are in this forum are probably more experienced then members of the NON T forum, although I might be making a bad assumption. Either way, this motor (if it works) will probably end up with a turbo slapped on it. Does that work?

yes but all those toyotas are RWD...this one is FWD versus RWD.I agree its probably the same, but I wouldn't be suprised if it was slightly different

The fwd ka24de block does appear to have cast motor mount locations for rwd format (as far as i can tell from pictures). One main difference is in the timing chain cover and water pump setup. The altima uses an external water pump of sorts, vs the 240sx water pump being in middle of timing chain cover. This poses an obvious water passage difference meaning the timing chain covers are not interchangable. So, to fit a 240sx head and upper cover (with distributor mounted there), the altima timing chain cover would need heavy modification (similar to a sohc/dohc hybrid). Only other option for ignition is a distributorless setup and using the altima head.

The fwd block and water pump setup also will make radiator hose routing difficult.

That is of course providing the transmission mounting and motor mount locations are correct for swap. Starter does appear to be in correct location.

No need to apologize bro, anyone developing a turbo kit for the 240 is more then welcome to ask questions about any said motors, whether in direct relation or not. Anyone not in a moderator slot really not need to worry about it either, especially since this forum happens to have the coolest mods on the internet.
