hello....

i totally rebuilt the engine. I set all the timing marks perfect. The car wont start. Well i had green cam as the intake and orange as the exhaust at that time. I switched the cams out...tried to rotate the motor by hand and it wont move more than 1/2 turn due to valves touching the pistons. So what im thinking is im going to have to swap the cams back to the way i had them to begin with (green-intake/orange-exhaust).

So what i need to know is the green cam the intake? because i believe it is. I had the notch on the dizzy cam in line with the dizzy housing notch and it didnt start...so please help...any insight would be good.

lewis

p.s. the car is a 93 but the motor isnt the same motor it came with from the factory so i dont know if this motor is a 92, 93, 94 or what....but when the had the orange cam as the intake the lobes on cyl number 1 were pointing up (12 oclock) when i had the green as the intake the lobes were pointing to around 9 0'clock.

GEEZ LOUISE!?!?! you have the cam timing off by enough that you have valve interference? although i dont really want to explain how to do it right, as a general rule of thumb, when the engine is at TDC on cyl.1, (refering to 1st lobe on cams) the intake lobe will point STRAIGHT to the left, and the exhaust cam lobe will point STRAIGHT to the right. the only way to be REALLY sure, is to pull off the front cover and time it to the reference point on the upper drive sprocket, thats what i ended up doing after a very annoying 248/248 install... it seemed that every time we took a stab at it, we were off a tooth in some direction on 1 (or both) cams... although i guess i didnt really awnser your question about the color of the cams, that (i believe) can be awnsered in the stickied post in KA section, about cam allignment... they mention color of the cams in there.

well see heres the thing...the way i had the cams before i switched them....they were pointing to the left and right...like u mentioned...i didnt everything right to my knowledge....1 & 4 at tdc....idler sprocket with the little notch pointing down with the little dot lined up with the chain and both cams were on the dots with the silver marks....im thinking its more of a dizzy problem...maybe i have a bad dizzy...ill look into that later tonight...thanks for the assistance for now people...

1991S13...that's an S14 motor, with the 232/232 cams.

S13 cams are diffeent, and colored OPPOSITE.

S13 cams = Green intake, oragne exhaust.S14 cams = Orange intake, green exhaust.

Notice in that pic there are only 2 holes for the bolts in the center of the valve cover? That's S14...

...

To tell which is which...look at the front of the cam. With the #1 lobes pointing straight up, the alignment dowel will be at 12 o'clock on the intake cam.

Hope that helps - Brian

Sorry for the misinformation Lewis.

How convenient of Nissan, just switch the colors around I bet they were sure that wouldn't confuse anyone.

Thanks Brian, I was almost too embarassed to make such a dumb mistake I wasn't going to reply, but if it weren't for people like you I would be spreading dumb info around.
