i was on my way home from dropping a friend off at mason and i was stopped at a stop light less than a mile away from my house. i was at idle and then i hear this loud "clack clack clack clack clack" then the motor dies i hit the hazzards and let evryone go around me, i then started it back up and then it was making the same sound evan louder. I looked behind me and there was a huge smoke screen, i drove it home in first gear clicking and clacking all the way home at like 3mph. when i got home i shut it off check all fluids and the oil had a fuel smell to it i waited about 20 mins then started it up agin. No clacking.. i take it out for a spin and for the first 5 mins... no clacking. then on my way back home it starts clicking and clacking agin...valves?time for an sr?i have the worst luck with cars.

what color was the smoke? other then the audible clacking how did the car run other wise? Did it start to misfire then die out?

If you have fuel in your oil it could be blowing fuel into the cyl. But it should not start so easily when try to start up after the incedent. It doesnt sound good though what ever happened. It could mean internal engine problems.

the smoke was black and blue, the car ran fine while it was clacking dident bog or anything and it only happens when it gets at normal operationg temp. (just took it for another test drive) it is fine until the temp gets up then all hell breaks loose. after it dies is starts right up. a few minutes ago i poped the hood while it was ideling and squezed the coolent hose's to see if there was fluid in them. i dident feel any fluid, and then i checked my coolent and it doset look like i have mutch at all....

your over heating it. the gauge is not representing your true engine temp since coolant isnt really hitting it. Try topping up your fluid and see if this still occurs. If your car has actually overheated to the point that internal engine noise is heard you have suffered some level of internal engine damage. how extensive will be hard to tell till you get it running correctly and moniter your fluids over the period of a couple days to a week. I suggest your change the oil as well since it is obviously contaminated.

most def right about that one, the water pump was gushing fluid when i poured fluid in the resivour. it leaked out so fast i dident even notice, prob when i was driving... i replaced the water pump flushed the coolent and changed the oil, it must have burned 2 quarts of oil. did it get so hot that it burned it off? its now running fine but when it gets a normal operation temperature there is slightly more valvetrain noise than normal but it feels like it runs better than ever. have any idea what could have been damaged when it was running with basicly no coolent at all??? :( thanks for your help, at least now its drivable.

change the oil a couple times in the next 500 to 1000 miles and see if the noise subsides. You may have developed some gunk in the valve passeges when the oil cooled from being so hot. pistons and valve guides can be damaged in an extream over heat condition. hope doing the oil changes will help clear up the noise some.
