the only thing yu get with synthetics is advantages...i was running with dino 10w40 and the car was runnign normall and i put in synthetic and it ran 5 times bette.r.it accelerated quicker and started easier and ideld alot smoother...the synth you should use is Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and whichever grade yu want..i use 10w-40 cus its thicker and protects better..but our KA's are rated to use all the way up to 20w-50...depends on where yu live.. also use a mobil 1 oil filter...mobil 1 oil products are by far THEE BEST products yu can use..DO NOT USE FRAM!...but yu should probably use the same drain intervals as normal oil , maybe 1000 miles more but no longer...its more expensive but deff worth it...but if yur cars burns tons of oil like mine does then its not worth it..it will not cause oil leaks and will not cause any other problems...its completely good for your car...good luck and godspeed

ka's LOVE synthetic.......but if you've got over 100k on it with stock seals........don't do it all at once.........or 90% chance you'll blow the front main seal like I did (actually the guy that had it before me)

Anyways, yeah, just go one round with semi synthetic first and you'll be fine.

I'm going to do at least two rounds of semi before going full. The last KA I had (89 SOHC S13) abso-freakin-lutely loved the synthy. However, as mentioned before, take it easy on your seals and make a gradual transition.

Put Mobile 1 5W-30 in at 116, xxx miles, and no problems. Used stock Nissan oil filter. The car ran slightly smoother and startup sounds a lot better.

I went from 10w-30 castrol gtx to 10w-30 mobil 1 without any problems even without a gradual work-in. That was at 140k on the engine.

Transition?? How would u do that? (half synthetic and half other...)? would that be safe? why cant i just use synthetic right away?

Well, it depends on how confident you are on the condition of your seals. I have heard from several different people that if your main seals are weak, a switch to full synthetic will cause it to leak or fail completely. Others say that they have not had such a problem. Not being one to take chances with the health of my car, I usually do one or two oil changes with a synthetic blend before stepping up to full synth. Each time I've done that (5 cars and counting), I've never once had a problem.

Another method I've heard about is a four part process. Basically, the KA holds about four quarts of oil. So, the first change would consist of three parts dino, one part (full) synthetic. The second would use two of each. The third, three to one, synth to dino. And, finally, all synth. It sounds good in theory, but it seems like a bit much to me.

Anyway, that's my response for you. By all means, feel free to seek a second opinion, as I'm not the most technically proficient member on this board (by a loooooong shot). I just know what works for me.

I went straight from dino to full synthetic on my 170k ka in my s13, and 1000ish miles later the only leak is from the drain plug. (I knew I should of replaced that darn thing)

I'm a little affraid to swap to synthetic in my s14 since the front main is already leaking a little.

I always thought that if your car was not set up for syn oil from the factory, you should NOT use synthetic oil

Synthetic oil is a lot easier on the engine.. and it has to be changed less. It doesnt break down like regular oil does over heat and time. I wouldnt reccomend it on an engine that likely has worn and used seals and already leaks though.
