I want to make sure that all of you know about the group buy going on right now for the discontinued Unorthodox Racing lightened accessory pulleys. You may never be able to get a new set again, so make sure you get in on this!

Here is the link:

Oo shiny Whyd you have to come in here with something for sale that i would spend money on? Man dont you know what your doing to us Ka-Ters?

I think a set would look great anodized to match your engine theme.

However i do want some things discussed about them. From prior knowledge the lightened pulleys themselves might give you 1-2 hp. The HP gain talked about in that thread is with the underdrive pulley. The underdrive effect is what gives 90 percent of that HP gain. So at 245 for just the discontinued pulley set, your pretty much spending that cash for show IMO.

Being a KA-T enthusiast myself, I understand completely. :D

Depending on the size and loss of rotating mass, I've seen that much whp gain per pulley. The UR underdrive crankshaft Pulley on the SpecV yields 2-3 horsepower, and its the same size as one of these accessory pulleys. Also, WRP technology makes a power steering pulley for the SpecV that supposedly shows the same gains.

I think we will see 4-6whp gain with the accessory pulleys alone. I'm in on the group buy myself, and I wouldn't go through all this trouble if I thought it was a waste.

[/quote]I was very careful to note in the group buy that the gains listed were with the crank pulley, but you have to admit that 90% gain from underdriving alone is an exaggeration.

Again, I point you to the SpecV, where the underdrive crank pulley yields only 2-3whp. The one for the KA yields at least twice that because it is a larger pulley, so it sheds alot more weight when made out of aluminum. If 90% of the gain came from underdriving alone, there would be no way to explain the disparity in whp gains between the two applications.

Either way, you know as a fellow KA enthusiast that every little bit helps. This is especially true for those N/A guys trying to reach 200whp. 12whp for under $500 (including crank pulley) isn't a bad deal at all when you're NA. SpecV people spend hundreds more for much less.

Thanks for discussing this and clarifying the point about the gains being with the crank pulley. I hope you'll get in on the group buy, for show if nothing else.

You have to try to think of it like this. Each pulley is attached to a shaft that drives something. The resistance to being turned created by either the alternator, or the gears of the PS pump is what causes the parasitic leech of power from the engine. There is very little rotating mass to the pulleys themselves. Also, the stock pulleys are not that heavy, its very rare to find a heavy one on most any car. Your not really losing that much weight when switching to alum.

Some companies sell underdrive accessory pulleys that will show a significant gain in hp(probably not for the ka however.).

Have you really done a dyno comparison between stock pulleys and lightened ones and seen a difference of 1 hp per pulley?

No, I haven't, but I'll stick with my guns on the matter. Both of us are just theorizing, so maybe someone will do a before-after dyno when the group buy is over and we'll know for sure.

Just my .02

ANY lightening is a good thing. Any underdrive is a good thing. But don't expect any noticeable gains. Since we're talking about 3-4 whp any gain will be very negligeable.

One of the biggest reasons people frown on these type of mods is the lack of "seat" power that is gained. So long as you know what you're getting when you purchase these you'll be fine.

Think of UD pulleys as a manner to extract any extra power without requiring some sort of tuning. Just like people have gained up to 15 whp on the dyno by disconecting their Alternator, or by running Royal Purple and getting 5-18 whp over their previous dyno proven hp rating.

As previously noted, they also have a sweet bling factor. Powder coating them to match your "scheme" would rock.
