I found a K&N RU 2820 air filter for $20. It is supposed to be a "race only" air filter. I'm wondering if it is if its worth buying and if it has any better performance than the normal K&N filter for an Injen intake. Also, how likely is it that I could get a ticket for it, being that I live in California (doubt it is CARB). Thanks.

Well depends how often cops ask you to open your hood... lol I seriously have never had a cop ask me to open mine.. but then I live in florida.... if you get a real ******* like the ones that will take a light meter to your tint then you might have trouble. I say risk it.

Does the RU2820 have any increase in performance over the normal K&N filter for Injen intake? Or maybe a better question is, can it harm my stock KA24DE (maybe something about the "race only" makes it harmful to normal engines)? Its only $20 so if it doesn't hurt the car, I figure I might as well get it since its cheaper than the normal one and MIGHT increase perforamnce.

*I haven't had my hood opened, but then again I've only had this car for 2 months. However, last time we went driving, my friend's stripped and non-CARB integ did get pulled over TWO BLOCKS after we pulled out of his driveway. He got a state-ref appointment so now he gets to replace everything back to stock, drive 2 hour to the state-ref, then replace it all again with his normal stuff. Interesting part of the story is that the last time I drove with him (and the only other time) he got a state-ref too ... I must be bad luck. Oh yea, and hes "only" had 2 state-refs.

I would guess that it is made to let more air though and filter out some of the larger rocks as well. you should be able to get some info on the size of particles it can filter out, and I bet the race one will let a bit more though. It probably wouldn't make your engine blow up this, or next week, people run no filter and do just fine....for a while. But even small particle of dirt can be bad for cylinder walls One book Ive read the equivalent of 2 aspirin tables of dust can add approximately 75k miles of extra wear to the engine....

I've got 123k miles on my '91 S13 and I plan on keeping it till it dies (or I break it...). I don't mind "only 200k instead of 230k" but if the RU 2820 harms my engine more than just a little bit, I'll go with the regular one. Anyone else have any comments?

I would imagine it does have something to do with what all it lets in.

It's probably less restrictive than the "street" version, given that K&N doesn't expect racing vehicles to run into dirt roads, dust clouds, or what have you....

Honestly, I can't imagine it'll offer a discernable gain. From my experience, when a manufacturer goes out of their way to say a part is "race only", it's generally for a good reason.

i.e. Panasport's slick-arze C8 wheels. Look cool, super light, but hit *one* pothole and their TOAST. Hence their "race only" designation.

Buy at your own risk, but when it comes to something like an air filter, I don't think it's going to be a big deal either way.
