If you get the k&n remove the resonater and get some flexible aluminum ducting and run it from the bottom opening in the bumper up to the holes in the airbox, that way you will be getting outside air not drawing in any hot air from under the hood, like a short ram does. Probably the best option is to get a true cold air intake the draws air from the fender well.

I have an AEM short ram, I used to have a drop in K&N before that, I feel more torque with the AEM short ram vs the K&N, the AEM sounds a whole lot better. Go for the intake. :)

ive tried this already. its a great start if youre a broke a** college student like me. but if you can afford an intake, get that instead, preferably a cold air intake instead of a short ram considering that itll be sucking in all kinds of warm underhood air. And besides, real intakes sound so much better than stock air boxes even with the resonator removed. And you'll be getting rid of that restrictive looking intake tubing as well. (but it does make your MAF sensor look real shriveled up after the install. PUHAHA!)

If money is tight, go to ebay and type in "240sx intake" and you'll get plenty of options there for cheap intakes. If you have the money though, go with AEM...and make a cold-air extension if you can squeeze it in. :)

If money is a problem like it is to me, buy an adapter that connects to your maf with a cone filter. I like mine just fine, but if I had the money "not to metion a underbody pannel" I woulda bought me the cold air intake.
