I know K&N has a good reputation, but the oil filter is $13.99 online. I saw it at my local AutoZone for $15.99.

I chose to buy the Fram filter for $3.99.

Is the K&N really worth that price?

No, the K&N isn't worth that... but the Fram is probably the worst you could get.

Genuine Nissan filters can be bought through our sponsors here for quite a bit less, and they're great.

Mobil 1 Performance oil filters are great.
There 10 bucks.

Depends on what Oil weight your use.
If its really thick oil like 60w which I doubt And you get a Great oil filter, would really slow down oil flow.

I got a Fram Extra Guard filter that says has 3X engine protection.
I'm using Valvoline MAX Life, synthetic blend 10W-30.

Is that bad?

The Fram Extra gaurd is a higher end, more expensive filter than the $3.99 Fram filter pawprint was referring to. The low-end filters in the $3ish dollar range are never a good idea to use, you should at least choose a mid-range filter in the $5-6 dollar range and if you want extra protection for longer mileage change intervals or just peace of mind, look in the $10+ range (all of these prices are very approximate but you get the idea).

Well I took the Fram filter back to AutoZone and exchanged it. I decided I would pay the extra money and buy the K&N filter, but they were sold out. Such is my luck shopping on a Saturday.

I ended up buying the Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filters, it was $12.99 so I think it's a good filter. Not as expensive as the K&N, but hopefully it does a good job!

pawprint,

Read the oil change thread:

how-to-change-the-rogue-s-engine-oil-diy-t296876.html

Lots of great info in there including oil filter recommendations.

BTW, my favorite aftermarket filters are NAPA Gold (made by WIX).

But Remember to do research around other places for recommendation. Don't Rely on one source.
But I Just now did a Oil filter search on Mobil 1 Performance filter and It was on the top 5 oil filter list.

I have been fairly fanatical on oil changes for years and have used synthetic oils for all my cars, motorcycles, and lawn tractor over the last 25 years. Right now I use Penzoil Ultra in my cars.

I do draw the line at spending $15 for a filter. I use the Purolator premium line of oil filters called "Pure One."

With current rebate you can get these for less than $4. See my post on this forum on June 23 - Rogue oil filter. :)

I did my oil change at the dealership. I got a coupon for $19.99 in mail yesterday which I plan to use next time. Previous threads said that Nissan Oil is a pretty good oil. I wonder if the oil quality or the filter quality changes with the cost of it or not. :inout:

The NAPA Gold filters are made by WIX. They are a very well constructed filter.

Wix is good, Mobil 1 is good, Amsoil is good. Avoid Fram oil filters; they use cardboard in places where they shouldn't and the metal they use is prone to rust. A Fram Extra Guard filter was the only oil filter that's ever failed on me in 25 years of driving (rusty internals, sprung a nasty leak). Don't be afraid to spend a few extra bucks (especially when it's only the cost of a couple Mochas) to buy a quality filter. It's worth it in the long run.

I did the same thing a few years ago... I cut several OEM and Nissan filters apart. Honestly, the newer Nissan filters are more than adequate for stock motors. I wouldn't worry about 'blowing' them apart.

Old style Nissan filter (prior to approx 2003):

Newer version with cardboard endcaps:

BTW asoomal,

Try to link to articles, etc here on NICOClub... we like to keep it 'in the family'. ;)

I will leave your link for now, however linking to competing forums is frowned upon: what-happened-to-my-post-thread-t494087.html
