k&n intake on my 2003 M45

i was wondering if anyone has intake on their 2003/2004 m45? caz i hear ppl sayin not to put one on but i really want to caz i love the sound of a intake and with that big V8 under the hood is would sound sickk so if anyone can tell why i sound or shouldnt do that would help

The biggest challenge you will have is finding one that is made for our Y34. You wont get much power gains, but I agree itll sound mean. If you find one, let me know

Avoid the K&N! Reason: The oils from those cones will damage your intake system. Stay with OEM when it come to the intake setup.

in a nutshell , there is no documentation to back up what he's saying; the oil on the MAF is a "he said she said" type of claim. nothing official in writing. (or at least, nothing to shut down K&N for good due to faulty air filters)

i myself have heard over the years people being denied warranty work on a faulty MAF due to "oil" mysteriously showing up on the MAF. these occurences (spelling?) are few and far between and the chances of this happening to him are very unlikely, but possible.

I read it here about a year ago from a previous member. You'll have to search it, but fiveliter hit the nail on the head in his earlier comment.

Yup. Nissan and Infiniti MAF's are known for this problem with oiled filters. Hot wire MAF's are prone to this.

Over many years of finding this issue to be a concern ... do a search, and you will see the reports. Not just in this M forum, but look at at Q forum at NICO too. Same engine, same problem.

The main reason you should not buy a K&N Air Filter is because of the numerous highly detailed and scientific research that has been done to show that the Filter like crap.

What I mean is they let in the stuff that destroys your engine over time, not only that but they plug up faster than OEM.

Best recomendation for a Y34 - and this is first hand knowledge - is to replace the stock filter with an Infiniti OEM or WIX 46053 Air Filter

The Y34 intake is really well designed and nothing worth to replace for any gain. My only hesitation is that I don't know the limit of the stock filter element as far as flow. The ultimate would be if they made the Amsoil Ea Air Filters for our vehicles - they offer the ultimate in filtration and flow filtering out down to the smallest particle size while out flowing any filter all while lasting the longest. the Ea Air Filter is a proprietary synthetic media created and distributed only to Amsoil from Donaldson. No other company offers this filter and as yet, they don't make one for any M45. That is one of the main reasons I switched to the Cone style filter on my car - to get the protection and performance I demand. The day they offer a drop in filter I'm switching back to the factory airbox.
